Possible duplicate: SO, math.stackexchange.com or area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/8766/…. @Mark Robinson, do you agree? – Maniero Nov 15 '10 at 23:08

@bigown - I'm not an expert so my honest answer is: I don't know. But since the answer to my question above is that it is for people doing cryptography, and since it already has 57 followers, I think it stands in its own right. – Wikis Nov 16 '10 at 8:20

@Ravi, @Mark, Since this site was not mergeed with the security.stackexchange.com one, and that one does cover applied cryptography, as in developers using encryption and building cryptosystems, I would say this should be more in the direction of research / theoretical / conceptual / algorithmical / mathy parts of crypto. – AviD Nov 19 '10 at 9:55

stackoverflow.com is the place for such questions, IMHO. – qbi Aug 3 '10 at 12:52
How to do X in language Y is certainly a programming question, not a cryptography one. If you are asking how to actually implement a method (regardless of the language), that is different. – Mark C Sep 18 '10 at 8:49

Meant to be off-topic - if someone is designing their own crypto algorithms, academic journals are the place for these, not a question and answer website. – Eclipse Jul 30 '10 at 20:10

This is one of the major questions that get ask in this field. If it pops up we should show a big red warning sign. :-) – qbi Jul 31 '10 at 19:12

How can I prove the randomness of a pseudo random number generator?

Maybe "measure" is a better verb. – Tadeusz A. Kadłubowski Aug 1 '10 at 18:17
The only randomness in a PRNG is the seed. You can however: (1) prove "pseudo-randomness" or (2) measure statistical properties. Proving "pseudo-randomness" means proving that a bounded algorithm cannot distinguish between the output of the PRNG and a true random string. Measuring statistical properties (which doesn't prove it is secure) can be done with tests in FIPS 140-2 or a tool like Diehard. The question could be made more specific to address which aspect is of interest. – PulpSpy Oct 16 '10 at 22:49

good off-topic examples are only slightly off-topic, where as this one is way, way off-topic – Brad Mace Oct 17 '10 at 2:57
Cool, I actually thought this was on-topic as I absolutely see people working in that field asking themselves the same, if they don't already know :) So the Area51 On/OffTopic categorization works! – Michael Stum♦ Oct 20 '10 at 2:00
