Not sure if I would call this on-topic or not. I would rate this as too vague, and would ask the original poster for more specific information about how exactly things are going wrong. – kbyrd Jun 2 '10 at 20:37
The only reason I would say that this is not on-topic is because it is to vague. There is no way to answer this question the way it is currently written. If it has specifics then I would think this would be a very good question. – B. Onstot Jun 2 '10 at 20:42

@Geoff I don't know, I can throw a mean 9mm slider... – TheHurt Jun 2 '10 at 14:12
1
@kbyrd: I don't see anything subjective about it. There is definitely a right and wrong answer here. – Geoffrey Chetwood Jun 3 '10 at 15:50
2
I think this is not a helpful question because of the lack of consensus about wound ballistics and because it involves balancing ballistic performance, legal risk, and cost which is very tough to do in the abstract in a way that's meaningful/valid for all readers. I think it would be a better question with more specifics, e.g., "I live in <location> and carry a <firearm description>. Many people here wear <type of clothing> during much of the year. What's a good self-defense round for me?" – gbroiles Jul 2 '10 at 6:40
2
The very fact that so many different ideas have come up in these comments supports the notion that this is a valuable question. When the site is live we'll be able to provide more detailed answers and evidence, and vote up/down to sort them out. – user452 Jul 2 '10 at 11:07
2
Upon further reflection, I have changed my vote to on-topic; while I still think the "what is the correct defense ammo?" question is too broad to be useful, this question is literally more focused - and there's not a lot of argument that FMJ is ballistically superior to JHP under any circumstances. JHP is considered to have failed when it performs like FMJ, and anything better than that is just a bonus. – gbroiles Jul 4 '10 at 20:47

This is controversial (2-2) at this time: would people please explain their votes. – Good Person May 29 '10 at 17:30
seems directly related to using firearms safely, so i voted on-topic. but i could see it being too basic for the community, or leaning too heavily towards self-defense. context, context, context. – quack quixote May 31 '10 at 5:53
@quack: You make no sense. This is not basic, nor does it matter whether it is 'related to self defense'. – Geoffrey Chetwood Jun 1 '10 at 11:57
1
I'd like to see someone who actually voted no respond. – C. Ross Jun 1 '10 at 12:15

@quack @Geoff In my opinion self defense and techniques with regards to shooting are on-topic. It IS more of a discussion type question which are generally discouraged, but it happens. – TheHurt Jun 2 '10 at 9:26

I have a Beretta 92FS with a very heavy trigger pull. How can I make it lighter?
added by Daniel Pratt Jul 2 '10 at 12:53
link
Take it to a gun smith or keep firing lots of ammo through it. It will eventually smooth out. – Wayne In Yak Aug 10 '10 at 13:51
@Wayne: If your trigger pull is getting lighter because you use it, there is a very serious problem. – Geoffrey Chetwood Aug 11 '10 at 16:13
It seems the issue is characteristic of this type of pistol. The consensus seems to be that I should replace the main spring (in the handle of the pistol -- provides tension for the hammer cocking action) with something lighter (a 'D' spring). – Daniel Pratt Aug 12 '10 at 16:42

Why? This is of distinct value to the firearms community and this kind of discussion happens all the time on other firearms sites. If you avoid this kind of content, you will be left trailing their good information. – Geoffrey Chetwood May 27 '10 at 14:47

If localized to a specific area this is a good question. In the US there are very specific federal and state laws that need to be followed to manufacture title II items. – TheHurt May 27 '10 at 15:40
@TheHurt will we exclude licensed gunsmiths and the like? – C. Ross May 28 '10 at 1:36

@C.Ross Heck no, gunsmiths are an integral part of the community. – TheHurt May 28 '10 at 3:08
1
I like the question because we're not dealing with legalities, we're looking at possibilities. I think it should be specified to individual firearms / firearm families, but that's a side issue – warren Jul 14 '10 at 19:13
this kind of question makes it obvious to me there would need to be a giant LEGALITIES tag, though. unlike a lot of the stack exchange, there are some little things people could be posting on sites like this that could get people in trouble real fast :) – John Gardner Aug 24 '10 at 22:05

How to fix a firearm that "stove pipes"?
added by Troggy May 27 '10 at 4:33
link
Or could be... what causes a stove pipe? or something like that. – Troggy May 27 '10 at 4:35
Since there are so many variables that cause firearm malfunctions, I think this specific question would be too subjective. It is definitely in the ballpark. The questions that will always be asked are what gun? what ammo? limp wristing? – TheHurt May 27 '10 at 6:32
1
@TheHurt: The cause is highly variable, the fix not so much: keep the gun downrange, drop the mag, lock the slide back, clear the rounds, inspect for damage. So this question isn't subjective, "What causes 'stove pipes'" would be – Zypher Jun 2 '10 at 5:39
@Zypher Good point. – TheHurt Jun 2 '10 at 9:30

What are some techniques to reduce recoil when shooting?
added by Good Person May 27 '10 at 6:59
link
at the no people - could you explain why? – Good Person May 27 '10 at 15:21
I think shooting technique questions are on-topic, but this is a very subjective question. Technically speaking, reducing recoil and reducing perceived recoil are 2 very different topics. – TheHurt May 27 '10 at 16:45
I read this as what could be done to a firearm to reduce kickback. That would definitely be on topic. – C. Ross May 27 '10 at 18:36
@Ross: 'Techniques' implies that you are incorrect in your assumption. – Geoffrey Chetwood May 27 '10 at 18:45
1
@Geoff I think this brings up a need to have some well put together FAQs that explain various terms to users. The "average" person may not have any idea what kickback vs recoil means...I wouldn't say this is a stupid question, just a naive one. – TheHurt May 27 '10 at 18:51

added by Geoffrey Chetwood May 27 '10 at 15:12

The word 'decent' in the comment is what makes this off topic being it makes it subjective. If the question was "Does anyone make a polymer magazine for a 1911?" then this would be a good question – B. Onstot Jun 3 '10 at 13:53
