I got an offer from [Company] to publish my dissertation as a book if I give them money. Is it legitimate or a scam?

I'd vote this as on-topic (if I had more votes). Can whoever thought this was off-topic please explain their decision? – saar drimer Jan 15 '11 at 0:14
I find the question poorly worded. How am I supposed to know whether the offer that you received is legitimate or not? It could be either! A better way to put it would be "How can I make sure that the offer <...> is legitimate?" – CesarGon Jan 28 '11 at 0:06

I find this too localised (very few people would benefit) and of little relevance to the academic world. – CesarGon Jan 28 '11 at 0:04

Again this question might be considered on topic on my proposal, but is a great off topic example here. – Mechko Aug 10 '10 at 0:11

@Mechko : I think a Q/A site is not a good resource for this question. your older colleagues are a much better resource, with the added value that if any answer comes, it's not available for anyone (the professor in particular) to see attached to a name. – Stefano Borini Aug 18 '10 at 16:49

Please stop voting this answer as a good off topic. We need two more off topic above 20 to get the proposal started. Save your precious points for other questions currently below 20. – Stefano Borini Feb 2 '11 at 11:01

May I know why this is voted as off-topic or not a good example? I figured this is part of academic life, and I thought it would be useful for someone wanting to shift to a primary research career (like myself). – Kit Jan 14 '11 at 8:15

I thnk this is not a good example: not exactly off-topic, but of anecdotal importance. I don't think this should be selected as one of the five representative great on-topic questions for this site. – CesarGon Jan 27 '11 at 23:56
@CesarGon - I think you may have a case, but allow me to offer a counter argument: I think people have voted for this one because they want to show that history questions are out of bounds, and this question conveys that message concisely. – Mark Rogers Jan 28 '11 at 0:04
@Mark Rogers: History questions are OK with me, but I don't see this one in particular as a major contributor towards the goals of this site. I get your point though. – CesarGon Jan 28 '11 at 0:12

Not a good example: highly dependent on country and even city. – CesarGon Jan 28 '11 at 0:06
@CesarGon - Should you not then mark it as a "great off-topic question" since you don't want to see this question on the site. – Mark Rogers Feb 24 '11 at 22:04
@Mark Rogers: Well, I think that salaries in academia are definitely on-topic. But this particular question is too narrow and specific, and vague too, because it is location dependent and the location is not specified. So it's on topic, but not a good question. – CesarGon Mar 8 '11 at 0:05
