@Studer - If you wanted to know the cheapest desktop processor, sure, but a lot of signal processing is done on DSPs and embedded systems (in camcorders and cameras, for instance) so this question might apply if this site accepts that sometimes people in signal processing need to talk about the hardware they are using. – Adam Davis Aug 25 '10 at 1:23

This one comes up regularly on SO and other forums. Usually the person asking the question thinks that they just need "an FFT", and so need further need explanations of windowing, calculating log magnitude, time/frequency resolution, etc. – Paul R Jun 15 '10 at 16:25

I'd expect to see this on Stack Overflow. – Matthew Simoneau Jun 17 '10 at 21:24

Why is this considered off-topic when "What open source software exist for designing Chebyshev filters?" is overwhelmingly considered "great on-topic example"? – Mark Borgerding Aug 30 '10 at 17:00
Yes, why is it? – ixtmixilix Sep 7 '10 at 3:31
1
I think this is a good example of some of the overlap between SO and this proposal (i.e. programming related, but specific to signal processing) - I'm not sure where we should draw the line as to what is off-topic. The Chebyshev filter one seems on-topic to me: i.e. that is not something I'd expect to see on SO, as filter design isn't strictly a programming problem. However, I'm less certain about this question. – runexe Sep 28 '10 at 14:18

Spatial-temporal denoising of video is on topic, but this question needs to characterize the noise more clearly and ask about specific techniques. – eryksun Jun 23 '10 at 20:44

@endolith: While I agree that electronics.* is an excellent place for this question the only way I see it could be off topic here is if analog implementation of signal processing are off topic. If so, the description needs to be adjusted accordingly. – BCS Oct 19 '10 at 1:10

If you're doing signal processing, you're in 3 camps: theory, practice, and design; software implementation; and processing hardware (e.g. FPGAs, DSPs, microcontrollers). Forcing a divide provides some semblance of organization to make it easier to find interesting questions to answer. The more tags you have (e.g. because the topic definition is too general), the more questions you'll have that are improperly or vaguely tagged. – eryksun Jun 23 '10 at 20:28

Apparently code is OK on this site. Every other proposal is being very strict about confining such questions to StackOverflow. – Robert Harvey Jun 3 '10 at 3:19
I think Signal Processing could be different. A lot of Signal Processing people write code to test an algorithm out, and do not really care about the art of programming. – earlNameless Jun 18 '10 at 15:20
Signal processing is information theory, communication & control systems, random processes, etc. If I have a problem coding a discrete-time system, I'll take it to StackOverflow. – eryksun Jun 23 '10 at 20:08
