This is also a proposal to bring an existing SE 1.0 site, Basically Money, into the StackExchange 2.0 network. Please check out the existing site at basicallymoney.com. Your participation at Basically Money is also highly valued and appreciated! – Chris W. Rea Jun 2 '10 at 1:47

Is this meant to be US only (based on the questions so far) or international? As regulation and institutions are largely country specific many (if not most) Q&As will be country specific. – Richard Jun 2 '10 at 8:52
3
@Richard the existing site allows for questions to be marked as country-specific, but many of the questions are cross domain, or relate to cross-border issues. To my knowledge 5 of the top 10 users at basicallymoney.com are Canadian or British – Rich Seller Jun 2 '10 at 10:59

Is the 15 questions per day metric a fair evaluation of beta sites?

What is the best way to create a home budget?

A bit too vague. – Gelatin Jun 4 '10 at 0:29
If it were simply "How can I create a home budget?" it would be fine. – Chris W. Rea Jun 4 '10 at 1:03

Should I use my skills to earn money beyond my day job?
added by justkt Jun 3 '10 at 13:35
link
I think ways for people to increase their earnings should be on-topic ... day job or otherwise. Earning more is one key way to attack indebtedness. – Chris W. Rea Jun 3 '10 at 20:19
Could concern whether to get into stock trading? – Gelatin Jun 4 '10 at 0:31
This seem to be more career advice oriented rather than "find ways to save money, minimize taxes, invest wisely, plan for retirement, etc" – Jerry Fernholz Jun 4 '10 at 17:37
@Jerry - on the contrary, increasing earnings directly relates to how to plan for retirement. It also has an impact on how my taxes play out at the end of the year. – justkt Jun 4 '10 at 18:05
Sure there are tax and other implications to moon lighting and perhaps a specific question about the tax implication of 1099 income would be appropriate but to me this question seems borderline off-topic. – Jerry Fernholz Jun 7 '10 at 16:48

I usually don't consider entrepreneurship to be on-topic to personal finance. – Mike Sherov Jun 4 '10 at 21:50
What about adding to your income as a side option? – justkt Jun 7 '10 at 12:12
@justkt to me "finance" is about managing and investing money or assets and not about working for a wage or building a side business. Careers and/or entrepreneur SE's are probably great candidates but I don't think either topic falls under personal finance. – Jerry Fernholz Jun 7 '10 at 16:20
I don't think this is relevant to personal finance at all; this would be better on another SO site. – Jedidja Jun 10 '10 at 2:57

Should I buy a car?
added by Rich Seller Jun 2 '10 at 7:39

I think as this stands this question is off topic. There is no context on which to base an answer. No reference to the means of payment, budget, usage, tax implications. Merits of used vs new vs renting, insurance etc. – Rich Seller Jun 2 '10 at 10:33
1
Agree, more context would be required. – Chris W. Rea Jun 2 '10 at 14:20
1
But given the context from @Rich, wouldn't this be an excellent question? – justkt Jun 3 '10 at 13:11
This seems offtopic considering the pros and cons of car ownership have little to do with money. – Mike Sherov Jun 3 '10 at 18:49
2
@Mike I think you are wright it is off-topic but dead wrong about the reason why. Buying a car is the second biggest financial decision most people will make and there are all kinds of financial implications as listed in my earlier comment. It is off-topic because there is no context to this question. – Rich Seller Jun 4 '10 at 9:59

Please don't mark this one as on-topic! – Donal Fellows Jun 18 '10 at 8:46
This is better to be deleted as spam than even thought about as on/off topic. I don't think it's a good example to define the site. – Lee Jun 18 '10 at 10:34
I agree, this should just be flagged as spam. (Not here on Area 51, but definitely if it appeared on the proposed site.) – Aaronaught Jun 18 '10 at 14:35
