Graphic Design

Launched Q&A site for professional graphic designers and non-designers trying to do their own graphic design (e.g. programmers creating icons/logos for their applications)

A site focused on graphic design, including icon/logo design, colors and typography. Questions regarding the tools of the trade (Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.) are also allowed, as long as they're relevant. – Can Berk Güder Jun 2 '10 at 8:37
6
I think this should also deal with the fundamentals of design, like proximity, white space, type hierarchy, etc. – cstack Jun 13 '10 at 14:57
2
@Waleed and @Can: In my experience, there really isn't much overlap between 3D software and graphic design (e.g., Quark, Photoshop, Illustrator). More often than not, any 3D is pulled from stock agencies and used in a piece. Beyond that, discussions about fundamental design principles would be the only real overlap; the exact steps to create a scebne in a 3D application ought to go elsewhere. – Philip Regan Jun 22 '10 at 16:43

Why is it off-topic? Seems like "What's the best netbook for coding"-kind of question from StackOverflow. – Andrew Андрей Листочкин Jul 8 '10 at 4:43
I think "What's the best netbook for coding" is a bad question for StackOverflow. Its subjective and argumentative. This question is the same...it would likely give rise to combative commenting in answers as people voice their preferences and opinions, without really providing a truly useful answer since it is all just personal opinions. These kinds of things boil down to personal preference, and are probably best left to hardware reviewers (where you can at least get a semi-scientific answer) rather than Q&A sites. – jrista Jul 8 '10 at 5:16

Belongs on Stack Overflow. – Can Berk Güder Jun 2 '10 at 8:53
@Can Berk: Would agree, this would fit best on Stack Overflow. However, given that this proposal is for a graphic design site, which is intrinsically linked to Javascript/JQuery and CSS for the web aspect of it, I would think this makes an acceptable off-topic example. – jrista Jul 4 '10 at 3:52

I think this question would be better posted to SO. But it does seem like it should be here at first blush. – Wayne Werner Jul 8 '10 at 15:20
It's a gray area; HTML-CSS could be considered programming-related, but I also see how this could be seen as a graphic design question – GSto Jul 8 '10 at 16:08

What do you mean by "color wheel?" Color palette? Color space? – cstack Jun 3 '10 at 20:33

"Most common" makes a bad question, so I'd say no. Had it been "which [color wheel] is appropriate for [web design]?", I'd say yes. – Roger Pate Jun 4 '10 at 10:00

What stores carry Brand-X art supplies?
added by Steve S Jul 6 '10 at 18:10

I don't think "art supplies" really fits with a graphic design site. I think the interest is more about the aspects of a design, rather than the materials used to implement it. – jrista Jul 7 '10 at 22:43
1
@jrista: That's the point. It's supposed to be an off-topic question. And, incidentally, this proposal still needs one more of those. – Steve S Jul 8 '10 at 14:03

Subjective. People may be able to provide useful comments, but there will never be a "right" answer to the question. – cstack Jun 3 '10 at 20:31

Is this a "review my design" site? I vote no. – Roger Pate Jun 4 '10 at 9:54
2
A better question might be something like "I used the combination of the xyz graphic and the blue & tan color palette to achieve xxx. Did I succeed, why/why not." – John Biddle Jun 17 '10 at 16:59
1
There are already 'review my site' style sites out there. If this did the same there would be thousands of questions popping up like "what do you think of this design?". I vote off-topic and/or subjective/argumentative. – Evan Plaice Jun 18 '10 at 1:20
1
@sirconnorstack I don't think answers would be useful only to the OP if reworded as I sugested. He would then be asking if a, b & c that he did achieved goal xyz. Answers would likely elaborate on why or why not the objective was or was not achieved. That seems to me to be valuable design guidance to many of us. – John Biddle Jun 20 '10 at 4:03

Too basic, not really a design question. – cstack Jun 19 '10 at 13:53
its something specifically about ps cs4.It does have a accurate answer so hows this a bad question. – Inv3r53 Jun 19 '10 at 15:38
1
I'd say this is a little basic; File > Open > Set dialog to GIF Images > Pick image. – RCIX Jun 19 '10 at 21:55
1
It is basic, which suggests off-topic, but it's a question about using the tools of the trade, which suggests on-topic. I'm sure someone will come along and ask this, and I personally would prefer to see it answered rather than closed, but I don't think it's one of the best choices to be a defining question of the site. – David Z Jul 6 '10 at 0:33
@daedlus and @David Zaslavsky: It is about tools of the trade, but it's effectively just software tech support, which I think makes it a great example of an off-topic question. In my mind, a good on-topic tools-related question would be more along the lines of "What combination of tools/filters/etc. can I use to achieve <example> effect in PS?" – Steve S Jul 6 '10 at 15:01
