Duplicate of Jewish Law? Or Jewish Services, Tradition and Halaka? Or Halacha? Or Judaism? Or all of them? – DJClayworth Oct 12 '10 at 14:25

I believe that this site could be tremendous under the new Stack Exchange system. There are literally millions of legit questions about Torah, Halacha, and Yiddishikeit, and most of them actually have actual objective answers. Judaism has a long tradition of asking questions freely and debating the answers, and a great tolerance of multiple answers... the format of so much of the Talmud is based around Q&A! – Joel Spolsky Oct 15 '10 at 2:19

(continued) There are currently several proposals floating around for discussion of Judaism, some narrow, some broad. I believe StackOverflow.com has proven that the broadest possible site is the best... let's make this a huge, active community exploring every possible dimension of Torah and Jewish life, and let's make it as welcoming to people at all levels of learning as possible. – Joel Spolsky Oct 15 '10 at 2:20

Is this a question about jewish life and learning, or a question about yiddish language usage? Or are those interchangeable concepts? – shimonyk Oct 14 '10 at 21:25
1
@shimonyk - Yiddish language usage is arguably part of "Jewish life." In addition, this particular expression is so culturally significant that the significance of its meaning [potentially] goes beyond mere usage and into culture/religion. Take a look at the responses on mi.yodeya 1.0. – Isaac Moses Oct 14 '10 at 21:52

Good example of a bad question (blog.stackoverflow.com/2010/09/…) – shimonyk Oct 14 '10 at 21:23
2
@shimonyk - Why? On the contrary, I think that it fulfills (or could fulfill) all of the prescribed elements for "good subjective": 1) It's a "How" question. 2&4) It lends itself to experience-based answers. 3) The tone seems OK to me. 5) Fleshed out beyond a headline, it certainly could demand that answerers back their answers up. 6) It definitely asks for information that would be particularly useful to people in the target audience. – Isaac Moses Oct 14 '10 at 21:50

1
This is not about Jewish Life and Learning. It's about a cosmetic issue, like, "How should I wear my black hat - tilted to the side, straight forward, brim up and/or brim down?" While it is an issue some Jews might have to deal with from time to time, it's ultimately a matter of no serious consequence, even to the person asking the question, and it does not require, or even allow, any serious discussion of Jewish sources. – Seth J Oct 14 '10 at 17:15
2
@Seth J - Believe it or not, when I originally thought of setting up m.y, I was actually primarily interested in dealing in practical tips like this, rather than in serious discussion of Jewish sources. I don't mind that the community evolved more around the latter, but I don't want to lose the former. Aggregating people's practical experience on how to deal with various Jewish practices is one thing that an Internet forum is uniquely very well-suited for. This is a great example of a real question that some Jews are driven by Jewish practice to ask and other Jews can answer usefully. – Isaac Moses Oct 14 '10 at 19:04

Question for the off-topic voters: Is the Conservative movement not a suitable topic of discussion in general, or do you not like the question for a different reason? – Ophiuroid Oct 26 '10 at 4:19
Conservative movement is non-overlapping with Judaism. Many Conservatives are not Jews, and many Jews are not Conservatives. – DJClayworth Nov 1 '10 at 22:02
2
@DJ Clayworth: I'm talking about Conservative Judaism, not Conservative Politics – Ken Bloom Nov 5 '10 at 16:32

It's not particularly relevant to Jewish life per se. And it certainly does not constitute Jewish learning. I think this is more a question about "Jewish culture" than "Jewish life." – Dave Oct 11 '10 at 19:19

the idea is not to "lead the witness." Let people vote based on whether they really think this topic belongs on the site or not. If it's intended as off-topic, it should be off-topic bedi-eved. – Joel Spolsky Oct 15 '10 at 2:14
