I totally agree with this broader proposal opposed to too specific ones. Tags will allow users to only follow the sports they want. And having a broader subject will drain more people, more questions and more answers. I don't get why we don't have more followers! :) – LudoMC Jan 24 '11 at 12:39

Go ahead and edit the question to fill in the blanks, it tends to make it more valuable and really simulate and expert question. :D – Gordon Gustafson Apr 19 '11 at 23:39
Unless the rulemaker specified this, I don't think this is a good question to ask. The benefits and drawbacks of any one rule is subjective. – Matthew Read Aug 18 '11 at 20:29
@Matthew I disagree with your analysis. The question is not "What are the benefits and drawbacks" - rather the question is "Why was this rule introduced in the first place". Most rules are created in direct response to current events in the sport. Being that this proposal is intended to cover the history of the sport, you can expect historians on the sport to know the rationale at the time for the rule. – corsiKa Aug 21 '11 at 22:16
@glowcoder I'd be happy if it were a history question. As worded I think it woukd dissolve into pros and cons, but if changed to explicitly be about history I'd welcome it. – Matthew Read Aug 21 '11 at 22:27
@Matthew it's important to note that questions in the definition stage are also intended to cover "Questions that boil down to this". For example, on StackOverflow, you have questions that boil down to "Do my homework for me" or "What library should I use to do X". Sometimes they layer the post thick, but when you break it down, it falls into a larger category. – corsiKa Aug 21 '11 at 22:30

Wouldn't this be highly country specific with different leagues and so on? Or is it more on a kind of "career path" question? – LudoMC Jan 22 '11 at 22:55
I think for this to make a good on-topic it'd need to be more specific as to the actual league/s you're wanting to referee for. – DForck42 Aug 18 '11 at 19:15

I think this could be a great question provided the answer is founded in the rules of whatever sport. Also, taking into account video evidence will help indicate if there was a judgment call issue in play. – corsiKa May 25 '11 at 17:51

This is the kind of question that you can look at as on-topic considering that many people who are interested in sports have also played them and will have advice on how to join a league, start one up, or get funding for one. This could be a very niche component of the site. – mfg Jan 19 '11 at 21:28
I don't know for this one. It could be on or off-topic depending on where you live. – Benny Jan 25 '11 at 7:48

Would medical advice be on- or off-topic? – LudoMC Jan 25 '11 at 14:00
This question would probably be best answered in a vague sense, like "Avoid contact sports", or otherwise require a full list of non-contact sports to be objective, so I'm not sure this is on-topic. – PeanutButterJelly Feb 20 '11 at 14:24

If this is "not a good example," apparently someone sees this as being an SE to talk about professional sports only. Where's the right SE for talking about PLAYING sports, and why can't this be it? – Josh G Apr 11 '11 at 17:48
That doesn't make sense, the vote doesn't have to be related to the fact that the question is about improvement. I'm adding a vote as such because it's vague/broad and subjective. – Matthew Read Aug 18 '11 at 20:31

I'm confused as to how this is off-topic. It is sports related in that it signifies the difference between a strikeout where the batter swings, and a strikeout where the batter was looking. – canadiancreed Aug 14 '11 at 22:53
