I totally agree with this broader proposal opposed to too specific ones. Tags will allow users to only follow the sports they want. And having a broader subject will drain more people, more questions and more answers. I don't get why we don't have more followers! :) – LudoMC Jan 24 '11 at 12:39

Is swimming an aerobic or anaerobic exercise?

Doesn't make sense. "anaerobic"? – Mechanical snail Jul 14 '11 at 0:08

@Mechanical snail : 'anaerobic' means "Relating to, involving, or requiring an absence of free oxygen", which is commonly the opposite of the word 'aerobic'. – Kunal Vyas Jul 15 '11 at 19:03
@offgehirn: I'm pretty sure it's possible to swim in the presence of oxygen. – Mechanical snail Jul 15 '11 at 20:04
Not sure this makes sense. All exercise becomes anaerobic when you're using oxygen faster than you can get it to the cells that need it. – Matthew Read Aug 18 '11 at 20:33

Good question. If we let them on-topic, it could start argumentative wars for "Is Golf a sport? Is Poker a sport, Is Chess a sport". I would them put them off-topic. – LudoMC Jan 31 '11 at 10:54
I'm not sure this is entirely off topic. I recognize Ludo's reasoning, but shouldn't we be able to objectively define what our site is about? Shouldn't we be able to define what a 'sport' is, and then assess an activity for its qualifications? I don't want to upset people by virtue of them being excluded by an official definition (look how many people were upset about Pluto not being a planet) but I do think objectivity is necessary: it plays directly into whether or not questions about cheerleading (or whatever) are allowed on the sports site or not. – corsiKa May 25 '11 at 17:55
@glowcoder I would agree but how to proceed then? How to edict these rules? Or should we start building a list of accepted sports (which could extend forever) or a list of activites not considered sport for the site? – LudoMC Jun 2 '11 at 11:05
@LudoMC I think a definition of what is a sport, or at the very least, what qualifies inclusion in the site, is better than a list. For example, questions like "Why should a sport be allowed or disallowed?" I think the first two paragraphs on Wikipedia sum it up well (I won't copy/paste it here.) I think it would be entirely acceptable to exclude "mind sports" and only include those based on physical stamina and agility. And honestly, cheerleading meets the criteria (high-end cheerleaders must be very strong and/or agile.) – corsiKa Jun 2 '11 at 15:14
@glowcoder So the question will be off-topic then as the definition will tell if an activity will be considered a sport or not on this site and these questions will then be useless! Now if cheerleading is a sport or not will be decided from the criteria given in the FAQ for example. – LudoMC Jun 2 '11 at 16:55
