@jalf What about Art, Design and Writing questions? – Noctrine Jun 4 '10 at 19:04

There are plenty of other proposals out there that can be considered spin-offs from SO. That is because there is a need for specifics. SO is not conducive to game development. Yes, there will be some overlap. I feel the impact on SO will be minimal. There is plenty more about game development than simply asking code questions. – IAbstract Jun 4 '10 at 23:47

Off-topic. It's not helpful to anyone else but the asker. – Firas Assaad Jun 3 '10 at 11:22
I really think this needs to end up in the top ten. It does a great job of showing that this site is about answering questions, not discussion. – cstack Jun 7 '10 at 17:43
First, we need to have a top 10... :) – Cyclops Jun 14 '10 at 18:31

This is a pretty subjective topic, and any answer is bound to be as subjective and become quickly dated. – Justin Jun 3 '10 at 13:19
5
"Differences between OpenGL and Direct3D" would be okay. – Firas Assaad Jun 3 '10 at 21:16
If you change it to Firas's question, I will give you a vote. – cstack Jun 6 '10 at 21:42
I think Firas was implying that his question would be on topic, which mine is clearly not? – Justin Jun 8 '10 at 6:26
1
It's a very good off topic question as it is; as Justin said it is a subjective question that is very likely to be asked. If you want you can add my question and vote for it, but I think in this case the off-topic question defines the site better than my on-topic version. – Firas Assaad Jun 8 '10 at 7:41

Getting this error message implementing ICE: what is wrong with my code?
added by IAbstract Jun 4 '10 at 3:21

I am voting yes because ICE is a good candidate for either client server game code or in fact a clustered game server. I also believe this question could suffer been overlooked on SO (very little ICE based questions or answers), however RPC middleware is possibly not this sites area of expertise. – Justin Jun 4 '10 at 12:10

I'm not so sure this is off-topic - broadly scoped, yes. I simply believe this is not a good example of defining Game Development. – IAbstract Jun 5 '10 at 13:18
Maybe it's not a good off-topic question, but it's definitely not on-topic. Does seem to fit in the "not a good example" category. – Cyclops Jun 5 '10 at 18:15
1
From my own experience: this gets asked ALOT on game development forums. People new to the field seem to always haver dreams of making the next WoW. I'd say it's good off-topic – Bob Jun 5 '10 at 18:21

What are the different components of a DIY game engine?
added by Justin Biard Jun 4 '10 at 22:41
link
Basic components? Nothing basic about any of the components...all kidding aside, this is still a broad question. Maybe a better question that removes any subjectivity would be What are the different components of a game engine? Let the OP decide what basic components will be used. – IAbstract Jun 9 '10 at 3:12
Agreed. Intended meaning was minimum required -or- "core" I guess but I see what you mean. – Justin Biard Jun 9 '10 at 13:39

What is the best platform for game development (Windows, Linux, Mac, other)?
added by David Basarab Jun 7 '10 at 18:17
link
Definitely argumentative and subjective. An on-topic version would be something like, "What are the pros and cons of Platform X versus Platform Y?" That would allow the asker to evalute what pros/cons are more important for their project. – Cyclops Jun 7 '10 at 19:14
I don't think this is a very good example of an off-topic question because "What is the best..." questions are almost always off topic. "What special considerations for game programming should I be aware of when setting up my development environment?" would be a much better on topic question, IMO. – Drew Jun 16 '10 at 21:59

Argumentative and depending on the game. – Ladybug Killer Jun 3 '10 at 15:08
Subjective both depending on the type of game and personal preference. – B. Onstot Jun 3 '10 at 15:19
1
Probably an okay community wiki question. – Spoike Jun 3 '10 at 16:11
3
@Spoike: Are you kidding? It's much too vague even for a CW poll. It's missing details for the genre and the expected audience. – Ladybug Killer Jun 3 '10 at 16:26
1
@Ladybug Killer: Reason I say that is I'd answer by convincing the OP it's not what "controller" you use that is important, but how you design how the player will control the game. By then you'd already decided what controller the player will use (the one that suits the game best). Yeah... by being a bit zen... or a jerk... it's subjective. – Spoike Jun 4 '10 at 10:29

Doesn't this work as an example of questions we wouldn't want on the site? – Kensai Jun 6 '10 at 5:08

This is off-topic...a great off-topic example actually. It isn't game development and should be somewhere else. I don't know why there would be votes that this is not a good example. – IAbstract Jun 6 '10 at 13:05
I agree it's a great off-topic example, and not just because I wrote it :) Seriously, people are going to see the word "Game" in the site's title and post all kinds of crap - like this. No clue how anyone could say this isn't a good example. – Cyclops Jun 6 '10 at 13:33

This is a game development site and not a gaming site. There is another site proposal for that. – Spoike Jun 5 '10 at 7:43
2
Yet again, I don't see why people are saying "not a good example". You will get this kind of question on the site, and presumably those questions will be flagged as - off-topic. So this is a good, one even might say classic, off-topic question. :) – Cyclops Jun 6 '10 at 14:20
1
Let me explain why I think this is a good off-topic example. From the FAQ: "[they] define the very outer boundary of a site. The ideal off-topic question is one that will likely be asked, but should be considered off-topic, nonetheless." So, for instance, questions about "vegetarian cooking" or "beekeeping" - while off-topic, are not likely to be asked (and are not a good example). Whereas, what is the likelihood that people will ask for cheat codes, hacks, warez sites, etc? I'd say it's high - so it qualifies as a great off-topic Question under the FAQ definition. – Cyclops Jun 16 '10 at 15:05
@Cyclops: I totally agree! This biggest problem on Area51 is people not understanding what a good off-topic question is. – cstack Jun 16 '10 at 19:39

Judging by your question, I'd say you're new to game development. Games like WoW are developed by huge teams, with practically infinite budgets. Which is why, it'd be better for you to start with something simple, like tetris... – aviraldg Jun 14 '10 at 20:48
Not to mention, the engines WoW uses were developed over nearly a decade. – IAbstract Jun 14 '10 at 22:32
So does everyone else here... nobody can be told how their modus operandi will be in this sense so you have to figure that out for yourself. (zen) – Spoike Jun 15 '10 at 6:38

Definitely code golf, but I am sure it would end up as one of those 100 answer, million vote questions :) – Justin Jun 3 '10 at 13:38
3
It is also a very subjective question, what one person sees as simple and what another does will not always match up. – B. Onstot Jun 3 '10 at 14:41
I guess it wouldn't hurt as a community wiki question. There was a similar code golf question on SO. You just need to establish clear requirements. – Firas Assaad Jun 3 '10 at 14:49
This also depends on what kind of game it is for – Simurr Jun 3 '10 at 18:56
