Why would this be needed. drupal.org/forum already provides a Q&A place. Is it good to splinter that effort? – Matt Farina Jun 3 '10 at 15:16
7
@Matt: There can be synergy between multiple support venues. Answers here can point to existing threads in the forums and vice versa. This provides a broader search engine footprint, too, so hopefully more people will be able to find answers to their questions. Also, the StackExchange platform has features that the Drupal forums do not, in particular, the up/down voting which lets good answers float to the top. And some people will find one UI or the other easier or "friendlier" to use. – Dougal Campbell Jun 3 '10 at 15:24

Not trying to splinter anything - just trying to add an additional resource. Personally, when I first began using Drupal, I found it very difficult (and still sometimes do) to find info on drupal.org/forum. For example, took me a long time to find info like a list of useful contrib modules - ended up finding that more through people's blog posts rather than on drupal.org. Thought this might be an additional resource. – suzecampbell Jun 3 '10 at 15:28

Might be more polite to say "Where can I find..." instead of "Please give me...". But you're probably going to get requests like that. :) – Dougal Campbell Jun 3 '10 at 15:00

Maybe something like, "I need a theme that will do 'X' - how can I find that?" – suzecampbell Jun 3 '10 at 15:05
Yeah, I was going for an example of this family of questions that would be off-topic. – squillman Jun 3 '10 at 15:10

Why would this be off topic? – David Jun 3 '10 at 17:57
1
Because it's a browser/CSS question, not a Drupal one. The user should either contact the theme author, or pick a better theme. Or ask the question in a CSS forum. – Dougal Campbell Jun 3 '10 at 18:11

I found it on-topic: think about "Do It With Drupal". It's a competition where Drupal enthusiasts try to reproduce a famous site, and to do that you have to know many things about modules, theming and maybe a bit of HTML/PHP/MySQL. – dag729 Jun 24 '10 at 0:14

I need a cheap, reliable Drupal hosting provider. Who should I sign up with?
added by squillman Jun 3 '10 at 16:46

A better question would be about what the requirements are for a good Drupal host, regardless of cost. Finding a good host is not a Drupal question in and of itself. – Frank Robert Anderson Jun 10 '10 at 20:42
1
"Cheap" and "Reliable" are subjective, dependent on the needs of the particular site, and a provider that's good today (6/2010) might be poor in a years time. Better to ask about requirements for a good host as Frank suggested. – Bevan Jun 19 '10 at 0:52

Agree that this is off-topic for Drupal Q&A - the Drupal/Joomla/WordPress debate should be outside a Q&A forum. – suzecampbell Jun 3 '10 at 14:48
in a way this is what the site is about, so it's not off-topic, just subjective when posed so broadly. meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/53919/… – Gordon Gustafson Jun 24 '10 at 0:00

Where can I buy Drupal?
added by percent20 Jun 3 '10 at 16:26
link
My first instinct was to say this was off-topic. However, what about a modification of this question, like, "What's the difference between Drupal, Drupal Gardens, and Acquia?" Might explain the relationships and clear up the issue of where to "buy" Drupal. – suzecampbell Jun 3 '10 at 16:39
I meant it how it was becuase I have had people ask if they need to buy drupal. They don't quite understand what OSS is, and that Drupal is OSS. – percent20 Jun 3 '10 at 17:00
@percent20 Absolutely! And it is definitely a great question - just wondering if it should be more comprehensive to encompass OSS, and also the Drupal/Drupal Gardens/Acquia relationship? Or maybe that's overboard? – suzecampbell Jun 3 '10 at 17:07
But the real point here is: is the question, as it is written, on-topic for this discussion? Personally, I'm waffling. But I'm leaning towards 'on-topic', even if the question isn't worded in the best way (but that's realistic, because you'll get all sorts of people struggling with how to ask the right question). Even though it can sort of meander into broader territory (the same question could be asked of many OSS projects), I'd want to point the asker to sites that explain OSS and the GPL. – Dougal Campbell Jun 3 '10 at 18:17

Not a good example, because it has nothing to do with developing or administering Drupal sites. – Dougal Campbell Jun 6 '10 at 1:49
1
Yep. I added this as an "off-topic" example since we are supposed to define those edge cases that are near the subject but off topic as well. – Justin Biard Jun 6 '10 at 3:40
Agreed, this is a great off-topic example. – Frank Robert Anderson Jun 22 '10 at 18:36
Not a good example, but perhaps not that off-topic as well: is a question about the nature of Drupak itself, that could lead to a greater understanding of it. – dag729 Jun 24 '10 at 0:10
