This is a good off-topic example--the bitcoin stackexchange should be about bitcoin, not about currency or exchange trading in general. – eMansipater Apr 19 '11 at 12:04

You might be attributing more meaning to "trading" than the questioner had attached to it ... questioner might not fully understand that Bitcoin is a fully functioning currency. Trivial question, but probably common to noob's within their first hour of exposure to Bitcoin. Answer might be "Bitcoins ARE money. You can 'make money' with Bitcoin the same way you 'make money' with any other currency ... provide a good or service and accept them as payment. If 'real life' means government issued currencies, you can exchange your accumulated Bitcoins for other currencies @ Mt Gox, et al." – Travis Apr 26 '11 at 20:47

For those marking "not a good example", I would suggest that this site needs to be a Q&A site, not a discussion forum. This type of question would likely come up, and would be off-topic. – eMansipater Apr 3 '11 at 12:05

Off-topic means "would be better on another SE site." Questions of the form "is x is better than y" are unwelcome on any SE site, and so, are not good examples. – Dori Apr 14 '11 at 2:32

@eMansipater - Neither. OK, remove it if you come up with an off-topic question demonstrating the same point, but until then, this is one (albeit NAGE) way of saying this isn't welcome. The best off-topic questions are objective with right/wrong answers, but that push the borderline of what should/shouldn't be asked here. For example: come up with a question that's slightly about Bitcoin, but which would be a great question if asked at Politics or Libertarianism. – Dori Apr 14 '11 at 3:47

	No conceivable way to answer this, since there is no way to know where bitcoin mining is occurring, amongst other issues. My power is hydroelectric, for example. Yet excess hydroelectric power from the grid I use is often sold to other areas, displacing fossil fuel power. So even I couldn't effectively estimate my own fossil fuel "consumption". How could anyone do this for the whole network when we don't even know who the miners are or what countries they mine in? – eMansipater Apr 11 '11 at 18:20
	@eMansipater: this is a question in the same spirit as Drake Equation, see Fermi Problem, while it is true that the individual factors may be difficult to measure, a correct answer can awarded if you devise a plausible method to calculate the final estimate. Then you could make rough estimates to the numbers, to get some ballpark figure. In short, it is not necessary to know where miners are, just use global statistics and averages and a make a good deal of reasonable assumptions. – Lie Ryan Apr 12 '11 at 17:49
	@Lie Ryan unfortunately it would also require predicting future human behaviours in response to bitcoin, since the amount of energy that goes into computing bitcoin blocks adapts according to the amount of processing power that joins the mining effort. There's also no such thing as "all bitcoin blocks" since bitcoin is designed to function indefinitely. I understand the spirit of the question you intend to ask, but the specifics of bitcoin make this literally a question with no possible answer. – eMansipater Apr 12 '11 at 19:23
	@eMansipater: There are a finite amount of bitcoin that can be generated, and it is predicted (by similar ballpark calculation, I'd assume) that the last coin will be mined around 2140; on reaching the asymptote, the amount of new mining will be insignificant en.bitcoin.it/wiki/…? – Lie Ryan Apr 12 '11 at 21:10
	@eMansipater: if you think that future human behavior might change in response to bitcoin, then state that in your assumptions; either you simply assume that human behavior will not change (except for the transition from paper-and-metal to bitcoins) or assume a future that you think would be most plausible.
