added by Pops Jun 6 '10 at 7:03

Off topic because this is not about the game but an exploit of various sites. – David Basarab Jun 8 '10 at 14:38
4
Stack Overflow is a site "for professional and enthusiast programmers". This should be a site for "for professional and enthusiast poker players". The answer to this question is of great interest to online poker players so I think that it is great question. – D.H. Jun 28 '10 at 10:57
1
Agree with D.H, it's a question relevant to a lot of actual people interested in the game of poker, that should be what's relevant rather than some arbitrary academic definition such as only allowing questions about the rules and math of poker. – SoftMemes Jun 28 '10 at 18:39

I play [exotic poker variant] in my home game. What are the best starting hands there?
added by sth Jun 8 '10 at 1:35
link
1
This is for "serious" poker players. This question would be consider off topic. – David Basarab Jun 10 '10 at 13:30
1
I'd say its on topic. There are many types of poker, and one of the key aspects of the game are knowing the odds for a given situation. What differentiates poker from other types of card games is that it you can use probability to calculate optimal starting hands. – Greg Bray Jun 16 '10 at 20:55
2
This is on topic. If "serious" poker players can't ask/answer questions then what are you trying to do here? – Simon Jun 17 '10 at 0:15
1
Chicago (7 card stud, hi-lo, highest revealed spade in the hole takes low share) seems like an excellent 'exotic' variant that could benefit from discussion. I've played in a number of home/hosted games where one could stand to make serious money by having an improved strategy for this and other variants. Pineapple Hold'em is also occasionally spread in tournaments and/or played in HORSE-type games. – meklarian Jun 22 '10 at 8:48
Definitely on topic. Many "serious" players are more than happy to play in wacky home games. – wdypdx22 Aug 10 '10 at 16:10

What is a continuation bet?
added by David Basarab Jun 4 '10 at 14:34
link
1
While this is a legitimate question I think that it's too basic to be considered a great example question when the site is aimed at "serious" players. – D.H. Jun 28 '10 at 20:44
1
@D.H. I disagree. When a player finally decides to become serious this is one of the first bluffs they learn. This is a site to learn how to strategically play poker and should cover all levels. By definition any player want to learn to play strategically is serious. – David Basarab Jun 29 '10 at 16:33
4
@David Basarab. Quoting the FAQ of Area51: "To attract experts, you need a site where people are asking very interesting and challenging questions, not the basic questions found on every other Q&A site. Your goal is to make it clear that this is a PRO site". The definition of a continuation bet can easily be found using Google. While there can be many interesting questions regarding when to or when not to continuation bet, the definition of the term is not a very interesting question. Let me make it clear though that I think that this question should be allowed, it's just not a great example. – D.H. Jun 29 '10 at 17:39
2
This is a perfect question for an FAQ, not a discussion. "When would I want to make a continuation bet?" is a much better discussion topic. – TrayRacer Sep 5 '10 at 4:17

This represents a typical hand analysis question. The body of the question would contain details about the hand and the opponents. It would be tagged with game type ("NL Hold'em") and stakes ("Mid-stakes") and something like "Hand analysis". – D.H. Jun 28 '10 at 16:54

I'd downvote this on the real site, we're not looking for "best of" questions – Pops Aug 31 '10 at 2:12

What is the best Texas Hold'em book to teach tournament play?

Off topic because this is subjective. Different books would help different people on each way. – David Basarab Jun 4 '10 at 20:49
1
There are going to be a lot of subjective questions when it comes to poker. That's the beauty of a site like this. Search for "Best Java Book" or similar over on Stack Overflow to see that these types of questions are definitely useful and should be allowed. – Simon Jun 17 '10 at 0:18

How do I use Hold'Em Manager to improve my game play or gain an edge in online poker?
added by Greg Bray Jun 16 '10 at 21:04

Tricky subject, as poker software packages are against TOS on many sites, but creating a poker Q&A site that closes any question asking about poker software is destine to fail. – Greg Bray Jun 16 '10 at 21:05
1
Software like Hold'Em Manager is allowed by most sites, so this question is OK. It might make sense to close questions that clearly discusses stuff that is against site TOS:s though. – D.H. Jun 28 '10 at 13:15
This is surely on topic and relevant. Most serious online players, playing multiple tables are using something like Hold'Em Manager or Poker Tracker. – wdypdx22 Aug 10 '10 at 16:14

+1 Good example question, but in reality most of these details would be contained within the body of the question and the question should be shortened to something like "AhKd - Flop top pair, value bet J turn?" – Tom Gullen Aug 24 '10 at 8:36
I think the site will need a way to markdown cards that looks a bit nicer than As8h9d, and will be supported in question titles. Then, you can define question a standard format for these questions, e.g.: [Ah][Kd] / [As][8h][9d][Jd] Do I bet? – configurator Oct 1 '10 at 1:58

Off topic because this is a casino policy not about the game in general. – David Basarab Jun 8 '10 at 14:37
There are some standard rules & etiquette though. I think some of these questions could be allowed if they are general enough. I'll try and come up with a better example. – Simon Jun 17 '10 at 0:23

I think there's a need for questions like this. Everywhere I've played, a single chip is a call for example, something that bites a lot of players coming from online poker where issues like this and how to properly announce a bet/raise does not exist. – SoftMemes Jun 28 '10 at 18:45

If you're in late position with pocket Queens, and there's a pre-flop bet and a re-raise ahead of you, what should you do?
added by Jaydles Jun 4 '10 at 2:19
link
The problem with these questions is you need allot of details to answer correctly. Pre-flop? Post-flop? Turn? River? What are the size of the raises what is the total amount in your pot, how much do you have are you playing a tournament or cash game. These details need to be in the body of the question to be answered correctly. – David Basarab Jun 4 '10 at 20:02
I lean towards meh - I can't decide either way, it feels on topic, but very vague. – David Basarab Jun 4 '10 at 20:02
@david, added "pre-flop", which I thought I'd included originally. – Jaydles Jun 4 '10 at 20:19
5
We have to allow for the title of the question to be sort of vague, don't we? Strategy questions will require a detailed explanation of the hand and that explanation should go in the body of the question. Tags (No-limit-holdem, High-stakes) will help the reader figure out whether or not to click and have a look at the question. – D.H. Jun 28 '10 at 11:35
This is the sort of question we need to attract if we want it to suceed. We can't just have a site on the rules of poker, you will have about 100 questions before exact duplicates appear. For this site to be interesting and engaging these are the questions we need asked. – Tom Gullen Aug 24 '10 at 8:34

This one has a lot of off-topic votes. Could people elaborate on why they think that this is off-topic? – D.H. Sep 3 '10 at 21:15
@dh it's kind of too localized, HOWEVER, Las Vegas is such a huge mecca that I wonder if it really is.. – Jeff Atwood Sep 11 '10 at 9:26
FWIW, I intended this as an on-topic, although I'll respect the communty's conclusion. While it changes, it's fairly infrequent, and it's relevant to lots of poker players, per @Jeff's comment. I thought it was a great example of the kind of question that has a right answer, but is extremely hard to find yourself through Google, etc. – Jaydles Sep 13 '10 at 16:34
