This is an explicitly non-programming question and would certainly be off-topic on SO. It could be on-topic in SU but would be unlikely to attract expertise there. – Verbeia Dec 17 '11 at 0:24

Mathematica includes a lot of functionality requiring domain-specific knowledge. People with this knowledge might not be attracted to SO and could be scattered over many other sites if there is not a Mma-specific one. The extensions could include things like recent developments in the domain-specific literature, e.g. derivatives pricing using stable-distributed underlying processes rather than the traditional Gaussian. – Verbeia Dec 16 '11 at 23:46

While not specifically off-topic for SO, it is more of a configuration question, i.e. SU, but would most likely be answered on a domain specific site. – rcollyer Dec 16 '11 at 23:38

We expect that Workbench, MathModelica and other Mathematica-related products will be on-topic but Wolfram|Alpha will be off-topic except to the extent that it can be used from within Mathematica 8+ – Verbeia Dec 17 '11 at 22:21

This is a good example of a question that falls between SU and SO, because the answer might or might not involve typing some Mathematica code, and the asker has no way of knowing in advance whether "programming" is required. – Verbeia Dec 17 '11 at 1:19
