There are quite a bit of DAW questions on this proposal, and it should be in its commitment phase soon. However, I think this would be an off topic example because it will not attract experts can be easily answered with less time on Google than actually asking it. – Vortico Jun 30 '10 at 21:28

What guitar does Jimmy Page use in the beginning of Stairway to Heaven?

belongs to a site for musicians rather than producers – herzmeister May 25 '10 at 18:48

I disagree, sometimes "that sound" has a lot to do with the specific instrument being played. – TheHurt May 27 '10 at 3:42
1
If the above question about what effects are used on Stairway to Heaven is allowed, it seems natural to allow this question since it answers the other half of the sound. – Jared Updike May 27 '10 at 3:48
I think a "how to get that sound" question would be relevant – Rog May 27 '10 at 6:28

subjective, will cause flame baits – herzmeister May 25 '10 at 18:54
Definitely. We should be shooting for >= intermediate skillsets here; the n00bs can search the lazyweb elsewhere – Nik Reiman May 27 '10 at 11:00
1
Agreed. This question is extremely subjective and on a beginner level. – Vortico Jun 13 '10 at 4:05
Maybe a little rephrasing might make this question helpful. Avoid "What is best" and replace by "What good". "What DAWs are good buy for a beginner?" – Andreas Jun 29 '10 at 15:51
@Andreas: Doesn't matter how you word it, it's still not an appropriate question for a Q&A site. Any question following the template of "recommend me an X" does not belong. Analogous questions on Stack Overflow, such as "Should I learn Java or .NET?", generally don't fly either. As I've mentioned in a few other places, these questions generally go south even on discussion boards; if they start invading an "expert" Q&A site and don't get closed instantly, then the site is doomed. – Aaronaught Jun 29 '10 at 17:48

How can I convert an MP3 to midi?
added by Rog May 27 '10 at 6:27
link
1
Belongs on superuser.com – Nik Reiman May 27 '10 at 11:04
2
I was skimming over this twice before I realized that this question has some relevance, as I didn't really notice the "midi"... :-> Audio to MIDI conversion isn't easily possible even today. Also it's probably a too special subject for superuser.com. But I think the question would have to be phrased more specific on a stack exchange site for music producers, something like "How can I get the best results with Melodyne?", so I'd still vote "No". – herzmeister May 27 '10 at 20:01
...you convert it by hand. :) Off-topic because I've never heard of any producers or recording engineers converting an MP3 to anything, much less a MIDI file. – Vortico Jun 13 '10 at 4:29
@vortico: i have. i had a couple of long conversations a few years ago with a company CEO who insisted his tech had brought Glen Gould back to life. (from what i understand, they did heavy processing on his recordings to convert to some kind of hi-def midi so a hi-tech player piano would sound like he was playing again.) interesting tech, but the hype this guy was shovelling was very off-putting. – quack quixote Jun 15 '10 at 12:01
1
Melodyne is a plugin and a stand-alone DAW designed to extract MIDI and change the pitch of individual notes in a track in an audio project. This example is asking about converting from an MP3. If the question was "How do I export MIDI from a clean piano track in Logic Studio?" it would be a more relevant example. One cannot simply select an MP3 mixdown with multiple instruments, click a button, and expect the software to output a MIDI file that is anywhere close to being accurate to the original music. Thus, if a question does not have a clear answer, I consider it to be not a good example. – Vortico Jun 16 '10 at 0:47

What is that high frequency (~15-18kHz) beep in songs with samples from movies?
added by Vili Jun 16 '10 at 11:37
link
Why is this not a good example? + Where can I find an answer to this? – Vili Jul 1 '10 at 13:04
What sound do you mean? The video/audio test tone? (blawgit.com/wp-content/uploads/test%20pattern.gif) 15-18kHz is higher than most people 40+ can hear, so I'm not sure this is what your example means. – Vortico Jul 1 '10 at 20:33
No, what I mean is a very high freq. sound. Maybe over 18kHz? I'm only 31, so I can hear it. On the soundtrack of the Mortal Kombat movie (don't shoot me!) it is clearly hearable. – Vili Jul 2 '10 at 5:53

What are the benefits of using Monster cables in my studio?
added by Rog May 27 '10 at 7:32

Subjective and definitely argumentative. Unanswerable, except by the Monster Cable evangelists. Answer to the question: None, unless you have golden ears and have spent thousands of dollars getting the rest of your music studio up to audiophile spec. – Robert Harvey Jun 1 '10 at 21:22
Not a totally fair answer - over the last 30+ years I've used Monster Cables they: Last longer, withstand abuse better, and yes, they do allow for a better quality sound to come out - particularly for instruments. You don't need to be Eric Johnson to appreciate the sound quality difference.... – AttilaNYC Jun 7 '10 at 1:37
Subjective and definitely argumentative.... in fact, we are already arguing about the question here in the comments. :P – Nik Reiman Jun 7 '10 at 7:23
Agree with Nik. I believe SE should provide a fourth box: “Great Subjective example”. Monster Cables are durable, that’s true, but from there to say that they “offer a better quality”… – Martín Marconcini Jun 7 '10 at 10:05

It's too bad questions like this don't get much traction. It is a very interesting question, and one that I'd like to see as many answers from as many people as possible. – Robert Harvey Jun 22 '10 at 15:04
@Robert: It's flame bait. This topic is even banned on several discussion forums. It's possible that a Stack Exchange production/recording site would form a polite, rational and mature enough community to not have this degenerate into a trolling match... but I doubt it, and I think that's something best left explored if and when the site is actually launched (don't let it actually define the site). – Aaronaught Jun 22 '10 at 16:39
Once the site is launched, I think some "fun" subjective questions with as many answers as answerers should be allowed. These types of questions will easily get traction. The question is whether the initial mods and high rep users choose to close them as off-topic or too subjective. – Bribles Jun 24 '10 at 15:31

My home studio contains <X, Z, Y> but I have problems <a,b,c>, what can I do to improve/fix them?
added by Martín Marconcini Jun 7 '10 at 10:06
link
"My studio contains a stereo and an amplifier, but I can't get hear my computer" would be off-topic, but "my studio contains an fa-66 and a windows 7 laptop, but I can't get cubase 4 to route external MIDI through it" is on-topic. This example question is super vague, sorry. – Nik Reiman Jun 7 '10 at 19:15
I think you misunderstood the template. The question is: My Studio contains a Mac Pro, Logic 9 a SHURE SM-58 and this, and that, but I’m getting problems with certain noise when I do <xxx>.… – Martín Marconcini Jun 7 '10 at 23:55
@Martin, then the sample question should be exactly that – Nik Reiman Jun 8 '10 at 18:57
sigh it is exactly that, if you replace the generic. Nevermind. – Martín Marconcini Jun 9 '10 at 10:32
I also think example questions shouldn't be too generic and 'template-like'. Otherwise we'd exlusively end up with questions like "<W: Interrogative pronoun> <A: Auxiliary verb> <S: Subject> <V: Action verb> <P: Preposition> <O: Object device>?" Although most of us are programmers and can handle such a level of abstraction, we can also be creative enough to come up with some more specific, awesome example. ;-) – herzmeister Jun 9 '10 at 20:55

How to setup Skype for recording calls with more than two people to get the best possible audio quality? Ideally each caller on their own track?
added by Jim McKeeth Jun 17 '10 at 4:45
link
This sounds more like a software issue. Splitting the Skype virtual audio-input programmatically. – Evan Plaice Jun 17 '10 at 4:50
@Evan: It isn't a programming question, you are just thinking about it like a programmer. There is off the shelf software for Skype that does it (Pamela being one) for two callers, but when you have three or more you quality falls off fast. I know there are tricks and techniques for improving recording quality (Joel has alluded to them) so I am sure people (including myself) would like to know how to do that. – Jim McKeeth Jun 17 '10 at 4:55
@Jim I'd say the 'pamela' thing is definitely a programming/software related thing. If the question was more along the lines of "What should I use to filter a vocal recording to sound better?" IE. audio recording here doesn't encompass all forms of recording audio, it's geared more toward recording audio that will be put into production. – Evan Plaice Jun 17 '10 at 5:04
@Evan: So it sounds like you are saying this question is off-topic. Is that correct? If so, please vote that way instead of saying it is a not a good example. – Jim McKeeth Jun 18 '10 at 3:59
@Jim what I'm saying is, it would probably be better to split this subject into two questions. "What's the best software solution to record calls with two or more people in Skype" which would probably fit a great-off-topic example because you would be better finding an answer on SuperUser or StackOverflow; and, "What should I use to filter a vocal recording to sound better?" which would more-likely be a great-on-topic example because it fit the domain of this site's focus a lot better. In it's current state I'll stick with the not-a-good-example vote. – Evan Plaice Jun 18 '10 at 5:04
