closed as not a real question by Robert Cartaino Aug 16 '12 at 14:58

It's difficult to tell what is being asked here. This question is ambiguous, vague, incomplete, overly broad, or rhetorical and cannot be reasonably answered in its current form.

This is really vague so I had to close this. "Looking for good literature..." isn't really a good basis to help define the scope of any proposal. – Robert Cartaino Aug 16 '12 at 14:59
I wrote it in a vague way, since it is an example question. For beginners or even professionals, who learn a new topic, I do believe it is great to have some links to good literature. As a "real" question I except it to be more specific such as "Recommended literature for motion planning, navigation, actuator design, point cloud processing and so on". And even for plain "Robotics" there is good literature, which serves as a good start and overview, such as the famous "Handbook of Robotics". – bit-pirate Aug 21 '12 at 9:20

When would non-linear Kalman filters be sufficient for SLAM?
added by Jacob Aug 14 '12 at 15:19
link
This question needs to define "navigation" and "need". Presumably you're referring to the use of Extended Kalman Filters in SLAM (simultaneous localization and mapping), but then "need" is a strange term, since EKFs scale poorly for this problem. Maybe a better alternative is "When can I get away with using EKFs for SLAM?" (short answer: when your map size is < 200 landmarks or so) – SuperElectric Aug 14 '12 at 18:24

Why downvote? This could be important for wide range of people, such as students, teachers, academics and even companies (e.g. funding). – bit-pirate Aug 14 '12 at 4:17
Sorry bit-pirat. It's not a bad question, it's just that we already have a lot of list questions here, and need some more questions which have definite right / wrong answers. Can you propose some? – Rocketmagnet Aug 14 '12 at 8:38

Any ideas how to measure absolute position around an axis of rotation as opposed to on it? Without using a best fit calibration?
added by Jake Aug 14 '12 at 13:16
link
Netzer, Renishaw and Hedenhain do off axis, high accuray position sensing but costs a fortune and is not compact. For something cheap and compact a small, off-axis abs magnetic encoder would be ideal but cannot find one! – Steve Aug 27 '12 at 10:48

How can we improve collaboration between academia and industry in robotics?

Nice! Interesting question. But might be to much of a discussion type question. These are usually discouraged by Stackexchange moderators. – Rocketmagnet Aug 14 '12 at 20:49
I would assume that there would be an associated meta.robotics.stackexchange that we could use as a place for this kind of discussion. – mjcarroll Aug 24 '12 at 15:34

A good question, but maybe better asked on answers.ros? I sort of assume that we'll get some bleed between the different communities (answers.ros.org, answers.opencv, etc) as this grows. – mjcarroll Aug 17 '12 at 19:31
1
@mjcarroll That is a good point. I am a little confused how answers.ros.org will be related to this stackexchange sub-domain. I like that the stackexchange network relates all of my accounts automatically. Also, answers.ros.org lacks a robust FAQ, meta page, and other functionality that is present on stackexchange sub-domains. Personally, I'd rather just ask all of my ROS-related questions here, but we will see. – David Kaczynski Aug 17 '12 at 20:12

I personally would really like to see Robotics supersede answers.ros.org, answers.opencv and so on. – sylvain.joyeux Aug 18 '12 at 7:29
