I'll put in another vote for just "Music" or "Musicians". – Ben Alpert Jun 22 '10 at 4:09
11
If it is going to be just "Music" or "Musicians" then questions about theory and composition ought to be allowed as well. There is another project being proposed (area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/7305/musicians) and everyone would benefit from combining efforts here, I think. if that's the case now, then the summary ought to be updated to be more clear. – Philip Regan Jun 22 '10 at 16:39

I think it would be a much better idea to have music performance/practice integrated into the same site; they really do go hand in hand; and having a separate project for each faucet musical learning/production can just get tiresome; especially when the tagging system is more than enough to separate musical areas. – DRL Jul 21 '10 at 14:08

I've been playing guitar for about 3 years, but my rhythm still stinks. How do I break my old habits and build better rhythm?

This is a real question I want to have answered. ;) – John Gietzen Jun 5 '10 at 14:17

Loosen up and play some Funk!! Learn songs like "Pick up the Pieces", "Listen to the Music", "Le Freak"...Guitar was originally built as a rhythm instrument to accompany singers/big bands/small groups: Rhythm Rocks, Enjoy!! – AttilaNYC Jun 19 '10 at 4:09
@Att there's no need to answer questions; the only job at this point is to vote to nominate good and bad examples. – bmargulies Jun 24 '10 at 11:24
@bmarg: He was answering me because it is a real question I have. – John Gietzen Jun 24 '10 at 12:48

How do you structure your daily practice?
added by bmargulies Jun 5 '10 at 13:16
link
The first and most important thing is to know exactly what you want out of the practice session. Everything else can be planned based on this. E.g. I want to smoothen out the kinks in that waltz piece - or, I want to increase the speed of that scale by so and so. And so on. If I don't measure, I won't improve. – talonx Jun 23 '10 at 8:07
1
@Tal we're not here to ANSWER question, just to vote for them as exemplars of what belongs (or not) on the site. – bmargulies Jun 24 '10 at 11:23
1
@bmargulies - Actually answering the questions gives it a 'real' community feel - I'm already using it as one :) . I am aware that whether a question is answered or not is irrelevant to whether the group is finally adopted or not. – talonx Jun 24 '10 at 12:30
in my opinion this question is by far too generic and broad, it is not the kind of question you would expect to pop up in three years time – UncleZeiv Jul 12 '10 at 23:27
just do it in your own way..............I practice whenever i want to and thats the way .............just play stuff you want to play at this moment and you will find that output you are getting is max........just parctice in a planned way if you are not doing one stuff well try out another and again return to the one you are not comfortable with...........diversify what u prac............... – Anish Chakravartty Aug 30 '10 at 6:11

What songs and jingles do you use to remember and identify intervals?
added by Ben Alpert Jun 22 '10 at 4:15

I'm sure there's a better way to phrase that, but most of you should know what I'm talking about. Like thinking of "Here Comes the Bride" to remember a perfect fourth. – Ben Alpert Jun 22 '10 at 4:15

@MPelletier : there are many reasons for that, but technically you could do it both ways, although in practice the "wrong choice" can produce inconvenient representation of the final staff. – Stefano Borini Aug 7 '10 at 18:03

@Ben Alpert 1. You blow into a Tuba and that's not a woodwind... 2.. Surely to be a woodwind you must be made of wood, and flutes are made of metal... – 8128 Aug 30 '10 at 18:38

added by nicorellius, edited by Robert Harvey Jul 28 '10 at 23:59

Whoever added the "not a good example" clearly knows little about the reality of playing music, especially live... – nicorellius Jul 26 '10 at 1:23
I didn't vote, but your "question" doesn't seem to make sense. Are you playing in a band where a metronome is a member? Are you arguing for drums instead of a metronome? – John Gietzen Jul 27 '10 at 14:06
@John: If you are confused by the term, "Metronome," just substitute the words, "click track." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Click_track – Robert Harvey Jul 27 '10 at 17:22
@Robert: I know what a Metronome is. His sentence structure is terrible. – John Gietzen Jul 28 '10 at 23:42
