I've asked database questions on both Stack Overflow and Server Fault. Stack Overflow gets you quicker and better answers simply because more people hang out there. I suspect a strictly database site, would suffer the same way – cindi Jun 8 '10 at 17:22

Like the idea. there's a lot with databases that isn't development or admin (eg modelling). I'll come up with some questions. – Gary Jun 18 '10 at 6:58

Yes, there is no right or wrong answer and even if you know AN answer, how would that help you. Please don't contrive a bizarre cascade of circumstance that only Dirk Gently can appreciate and follow. – Stephanie Page Sep 16 '10 at 21:33

How can I optimize a search in [database] for the highest numbered record for each cluster of records where clusters are defined by a composite key?
added by Joe Jul 9 '10 at 11:08
link
True story -- I've got to implement search in a PostgreS database where they store older versions of the records in the same table, and don't ever update records to mark them as deprecated ... currently, I'm using Slony to replicate the tables to another database under my control, then using triggers to maintain a 'slimmed down' table that's de-duplicated. (and the table is going to grow by 50k clusters per day, for at least 5 years (assuming nothing goes wrong and they lose the spacecraft). and we have no idea how many records per cluster (3? 10? 50?) just that it'll grow) – Joe Jul 9 '10 at 11:13

I wonder why this is seen as offtopic – xenoterracide Aug 4 '10 at 20:09
Probably because it is more of a wiki based question as it is subjective, there is no one correct answer. – Toby Aug 18 '10 at 22:09
There might be depending on the 'following problem' I can't give a full problem description here. but it doesn't really matter to I don't think in the end the stuff matters much for what the product turns in to. – xenoterracide Aug 19 '10 at 7:07

Thought about adding PostgreSQL too, but I ran out of room. I figured this is a pretty common question, although it would probably be a decision between MySQL and PostgreSQL from what I've heard from different web developers. – Jeff Sep 16 '10 at 19:25

We are using a 3rd party software that says it requires SQL Server 2005 Standard, would it be okay to use 2008 instead? Can I use developer edition?
added by Jeff Sep 16 '10 at 19:05

I came up with this one based on some products I've worked with at past employers... it always seemed that we had to have a dedicated SQL Server or Oracle box for a specific application, and it never seemed to be the latest version of either. – Jeff Sep 16 '10 at 19:30
