Overlap with StackOverflow. – KennyTM Jun 6 '10 at 19:01

I've asked database questions on both Stack Overflow and Server Fault. Stack Overflow gets you quicker and better answers simply because more people hang out there. I suspect a strictly database site, would suffer the same way – cindi Jun 8 '10 at 17:22

Like the idea. there's a lot with databases that isn't development or admin (eg modelling). I'll come up with some questions. – Gary Jun 18 '10 at 6:58

This is a problem I came up against when installing s/w for a new workstation. I ended up downloading the latest s/w from MySQL and had to revert to the older MySQL Query Browser to connect to this old MySQL db until it's upgraded. :D – Jeff Sep 16 '10 at 19:23

19th vote. ONE MORE OFF TOPIC VOTE NEEDED! – meder Oct 6 '10 at 6:30
@mader yeah, but it took over 3 months to get those 19 votes ... 'Can I write off MS SQL Server on my taxes' got 12 votes in less than a month. (so if there's anyone who's not voting for it, that's one of the over 20 votes on the top two, consider moving a vote) – Joe Oct 6 '10 at 17:00

Belongs on StackOverflow. – Vivelin Jul 14 '10 at 10:18
Does it? telling them how to write a prepared statement is no good here? or write a stored procedure? – xenoterracide Aug 4 '10 at 20:16
I would be tempted to say stackoverflow as well. Does it make a difference that Java is calling it? To me it sounds like the author wants a Java based answer not a DB based one. – Toby Aug 18 '10 at 22:24

While SSIS and DTS are part of MS SQL Server, my opinion is that these are a more specialized field and there are already useful sites that deal with SSIS and DTS. – Jeff Jul 20 '10 at 15:58

I can see this being an off-topic post, but I can also see where people might try to answer it by asking additional questions such as what the legacy application was using, there might be some kind of OLE DB or ODBC connector/interface to it. Then again... if it was a 3rd party Accounts Payable program or something like that there might not be. – Jeff Sep 16 '10 at 19:32
@Jeff that was what I had in mind, was some sort of 3rd party proprietary software. – leeand00 Sep 16 '10 at 22:29

I'm new to SQL and databases. My work has a bunch of databases in Excel. Which is better, Excel or SQL Server?
added by Jeff, edited by WikiSpeedia hang-around Oct 4 '10 at 18:05

I thought about using Access instead of Excel for this question, but figured it would be better as an off-topic example if it used Excel. I've worked with people in the past that kept everything in Excel, event things that would have been better in Excel; so I figured it might be a realistic off-topic Q. :D – Jeff Sep 16 '10 at 19:26

While this question isn't really off-topic, it'd be a good example of a "too vague" question. The best tool really depends on what you mean by "develop a database". – CanSpice Sep 20 '10 at 16:43

I would be ok with this question if it were MySQL in reference to the recent forks and oracle buyout. But there's absolutely nothing to suggest that postgres is taking a downturn. – xenoterracide Jul 21 '10 at 7:57
I'm just not sure conjecture about the future of a database system has a place in this site - I can read about this kind of stuff in the trade mags... – ScottCher Sep 21 '10 at 20:29
