How can one decide the best repository for one's research after one dies? What questions should one ask? What should one put in his/her will?

I'm not sure why this received a down vote. A lot of family history ends up in the circular file or the soon-to-be flooded basement. – GeneJ Sep 5 '12 at 12:21

What does it mean if a probate index lists a person's record as "Last Name, First Name, Insanity of", instead of "Last Name, First Name, Estate of"?

Congratulations on your question maguidhir, which became our 100th question. – lkessler Sep 8 '12 at 17:52

Should unsavory experience (for example, criminal record) be recorded in a family tree? The person has been deceased over 100 years.

This question would be good without the qualifier of being dead for 100 years: the site can't entertain unlimited duplicates of the same basic premise by changing the date (e.g., "I know the answer is X for 100 years dead, but what about 30/40/50/60/70/99 years?") – Mark Trapp Aug 31 '12 at 4:13
@ Mark. There are some general parameters in genealogy; some relate to sensitivity and "100 years" is relative. To me, it's code to "fair outside lifespan." So, Mary's delimiter, "deceased over 100 years" I interpreted as, "We can be pretty sure his spouse and children are also deceased." – GeneJ Sep 7 '12 at 8:50

My family tree is all done. What should I do now?

This is a question that I have run into many times, and used to think myself, why did it get a negative vote??? – david.tanner Sep 4 '12 at 21:43

Wow. How can this be possible if one is tracing the siblings and children of each ancestor? Maybe if one is only looking at direct ancestors. Then spend the time tracing the ancestors of the people who married into the family. – MitzyMoo Sep 4 '12 at 22:55

To someone that is actually working on genealogy I am sure this is a dumb question, but for those that have never tried this is a big issue and may cause them not to get started. As a member of the LDS faith, and my family having been members since the establishment of the church, most of my family tree has been done looking at my direct ancestors. My sister hasn't even looked at our family tree because she thinks it is all done.. – david.tanner Sep 5 '12 at 13:13
@David - now I've read your explanation, can I suggest you reword the question to change "all" to "already" done, maybe adding "completed by someone else" – Andrew Sep 8 '12 at 8:33

Also unclear about why this question has a down vote. It's surely a community topic at the international level. – GeneJ Sep 5 '12 at 12:24

I have that same question! If I had more votes I would send one here. Without these kind of questions then the work dies with this generation, and what is the point? – david.tanner Sep 5 '12 at 13:20

Well, to me this is a legitimate question that people could have. I'd give a response like "Maybe your cousin wants to ensure the data is kept private, and is afraid you will publish it everywhere." But if you downvote a question or vote to close it, please add a comment as to why you are doing that, so we can all learn what makes a question good for the Q&A forum. – lkessler Sep 2 '12 at 16:23
