What mechanics can you use to incentivize adoption of a system when the problem is that people don't even use it in the first place?

@Trying2Help This is not the time and not the place to answer questions. In this phase example questions are collected. Comments should be about the question, not trying to answer it. - But you have at least one valid example questions in your comment, I think! – Alexander Kosubek Sep 24 '12 at 8:35

Please note that voting on questions that already have 10 upvotes does not help the sites definition. Its much better to upvote questions which do not have 10 votes already. – Torben Gundtofte-Bruun Jan 23 '13 at 14:41

@Torben It's better to vote on good questions even if they already have more than 10 votes. The goal is to have a good site, not to just have a site. – Eva Mar 21 '13 at 17:34

I wonder if "more effective" would be better than "more popular". Popular is very subjective and doesn't necessarily mean those that actually work. – EdC Nov 24 '12 at 8:56

Can the "unlock features" metaphor be employed to ease the acquaintance of a new user to a complex UI? Or would it only hide useful functionality?
added by mgibsonbr Feb 22 '13 at 2:08

Clarification: many games with complex mechanics don't throw them all to a new player at once; instead, they introduce possible action one-by-one, keeping the "locked" ones hidden or, less comonly, disabled. Using a similar system could be a good alternative to the dichotomy "simple, clean, dumbed-down UI" vs. "complete, advanced-user, spaceship-control-panel UI". This question (which overlaps with "user experience" in SE) would be about pros and cons of such approach, existing studies analysing its effects, etc. – mgibsonbr Feb 22 '13 at 2:18
I think this example question should be much higher in the list, great question. – Jalayn Mar 21 '13 at 13:00

Is it more effective to keep users up-to-date on their progress towards badges, or should there be some element of surprise when a badge is awarded?
added by Bill the Lizard Sep 23 '12 at 23:36

Is this not a very subjective question ? The approach would vary depending on the type of the badge as was seen in Winter Bash (with hats). This would just turn into an all-out debate. – AsheeshR Jan 26 '13 at 10:13
@AshRj Almost all of the question here seem subjective because you can only read the title. Assume that examples need to be given, or that research needs to be cited (which is difficult to fit into every title, not to mention redundant). – Bill the Lizard Jan 26 '13 at 13:41
I would not say that for all the questions here, some yes. Even then, IMO this one is a little too debate-oriented. Anyways, doesn't matter. Its still at the threshold of 10 votes. – AsheeshR Jan 26 '13 at 13:52

Won't the gamified system break down if players are allowed to directly reward other players with badges/achievements following certain actions ?
added by Jalayn Apr 12 '13 at 12:59
link
What I'm meaning by "direct" is that a user can explicitly reward a user with a badge. Example: you are in a IT consulting company and part of your job is to update your CV from time to time. Doing that ensures that managers have an easier time selling you better and also finding a mission that suits you. What If I gamify this so that whenever you edit your CV significantly you are rewarded with a badge. The problem is that "significantly" means is that it has to be reviewed first by a human. The reviewer can in the end decide whether it was a good "update" or not, resulting in a badge or not. – Jalayn Apr 12 '13 at 13:05
