Doesn't belong, but "What movies did [Bruce Lee] make?" I wouldn't be so sure about. – Roger Pate Jun 8 '10 at 9:45

What equipment is required to participate in [fencing] at [national] level?
added by Colonel Sponsz Jun 22 '10 at 19:15
link
I am particularly thinking of my sport - fencing - here as there are different certification standards of kit required to participate at different levels (club, national, international) but I guess it will apply to other martial arts too. – Colonel Sponsz Jun 22 '10 at 19:18
I think this is a wonderful off-topic example. Shame I've used my votes already. Fencing is a sport, not a martial art. – Trevoke Sep 21 '10 at 18:39
@Trevoke: I completely disagree. Fencing is both a sport and a martial art, just like taekwon-do or judo. It originated from real combat techniques, and the sport form is extremely close to real combat. Any expert fencer is going to be an expert swordsman. – Justin Morgan Feb 11 '11 at 20:14

This proposal is going nowhere unless someone takes over from Zombie Frank and gives it direction (slugster?). It's good to sign up, to indicate interest, but I'd not bother posting questions until then. – Charles Stewart Jul 7 '10 at 16:43
@charles - i wouldn't mind helping to drive this one, it does seem to have stalled somewhat, possibly lost in the mess of new proposals. I think we (current followers) need to get the word out to a wider audience by using the Share this link at the top left. It would be a shame to see this go to waste. – slugster Jul 8 '10 at 10:14
I would suggest, and am probably going to, to the members of Karate Underground. Those forums, and the previous forums, and the previous AMAKS newsgroups, have proven to be the only group that is cohesive enough to form the 'critical mass' needed for this site. – John Kraft Jul 8 '10 at 15:25

How is this off topic and the Bruce Lee question on topic? On one hand you have movie fake martial arts, while on the other you have real martial arts... – meder Nov 6 '10 at 16:29
I think this would be on topic if it was something like "What are some good escapes from the triangle?" and referenced Fedor's move as an example in the question body. – Justin Morgan Feb 11 '11 at 20:19

I think this is a very good off-topic question. It's clearly martial arts related and "movie" martial arts questions are likely to come up quite often. However, it's not on topic for serious martial artists. – Drew Jun 16 '10 at 22:08
This also looks like questions that are off-topic for the cooking stackexchange: what is a good recipe for margarita? a better question: in this recipe, [this] is wrong with [this] recipe of margarita, how can I improve it. Personally i think this needs to be reworded. "Should I be using software to help me run my school?" is an unanswerable question. "what are some good options?" could very well be on topic. – slugster Jul 21 '10 at 11:19

I think it's off-topic for many reasons: too general (any technique from any style), "most effective" (subjective), and more importantly, this looks more like "I want you to help me hurt somebody" instead of "I want to improve my technique". – Barthelemy Oct 7 '10 at 9:59

Pros and cons sound too subjective, as everyone has their own opinion. 'practical/technical differences between [styles]' reads better. – wez Aug 3 '10 at 12:02
Plenty of room for subjective flame war here. Martial arts community being highly fractured as it is, this type of "us" vs "them" discussions are more of a flaimbait than anything else... – Roland Tepp Sep 29 '10 at 14:32

How often should I train per week?
added by Keith Nicholas, edited by WikiSpeedia hang-around Oct 4 '10 at 21:01

Has to be off topic (subjective) - there are too many variables at play: the type of training, the physical capability of the practitioner, their rank in their particular art. – slugster Jun 24 '10 at 9:18
This is not off topic, its a bad question. A better version of this might be "I want to get to [national|international|x-grade] level in [x-art] in [x-amount of time]. How often should I train per week?" – Ali Aug 5 '10 at 16:15

NaGE: "best" questions are usually provoke the wrong kind of arguments. – Charles Stewart Jun 8 '10 at 8:03
The mental and spiritual discipline is usually a product of the teacher, not the art, so it would be off topic. – slugster Jun 8 '10 at 9:42
@slugster: The MA does play a big role. Shorinji Kempo has meditation and moral instruction as part of the class syllabus. While I've heard talk of Jewish spirituality in connection with Krav maga, what I've seen of the syllabus is completely free of it. I'd say it's clearly on topic, If it was rephrased so that there wasn't "best" in the title, it would maybe be a good question. – Charles Stewart Jun 9 '10 at 9:17
1
@charles, what i was meaning is that all the arts (except maybe some fringe ones like savate and the modern heterogenous ones like MMA) have a major mental/spiritual component, but frequently how much this is practiced is governed by the teacher. So the question is OT because it asks which is best when they all have it. – slugster Jun 9 '10 at 11:31
1
@slugster: the "best" makes it "not a good example", not off-topic. About the rest of what you say, these are the kind of points that I'd expect to see in the answers: the question is off-topic depending on whether this kind of talk would be bad for the site. – Charles Stewart Jun 9 '10 at 12:29

I am not sure why its downvoted, but for me its hard to understand the question. Are you asking about equipment for shooting training? If yes, I do agree that's the wrong subject. – Cornelius Jul 9 '10 at 9:54
@Cornelius: It's a skill with martial applications that you need to train to use effectively. It should be off-topic, because there will be better places elsewhere, but the line is somewhat arbitrary. I'll rephrase the qn to make clear its about training guns. – Charles Stewart Jul 9 '10 at 10:57

added by slugster Jun 8 '10 at 9:56

"Should" questions are difficult to answer and argumentative. Perhaps rephrase as, "what are the pros/cons of males/females/children having different requirements ..." – Zombie Praeclarum Jun 12 '10 at 16:07
@Frank Krueger Agreed, which is why I voted not a good example. Argumentative questions are not good examples for any Q/A site, IMO. – Drew Jun 16 '10 at 22:09
