If I am a trained martial artist, am I more liable than an untrained person if I hurt someone in a fight?

I think this is an interesting question for expert practitioners. For example, I heard a story about a guy who practiced his nunchuks in the park every day. As he practiced he was attacked by two muggers. He broke their arms, and called the police. This was seen as 'undue force' by the law - he was forced to pay damages. – ire_and_curses Jun 12 '10 at 2:13
1
Good question. It's not anecdotal but the truth. There are numerous instances of "undue force" being filed against would-have-been victims. We are taught some specifics such as throwing away disarmed knives knives, etc. – Zombie Praeclarum Jun 12 '10 at 16:04
2
I don't think this is a good question -- the web is global, while this question is one for a lawyer that researches and understands national, state, and local regulations. – Ryan Prior Jul 13 '10 at 6:48
1
It's a good question, but then, I would add at least the country to it (I'm sure the state/province would be better, but country is a good start): If I am a trained martial artist, am I more liable in the USA than an untrained person if I hurt someone in a fight? – Barthelemy Oct 6 '10 at 19:08

Which discipline would you recommend for a 6 year old?
added by juanformoso Jun 7 '10 at 19:42

With Martial Arts we are always susceptible to religious wars. I love this question since it's completely valid, but I am afraid it's subjectiveness will lead to discussions rather than answers. – Zombie Praeclarum Jun 7 '10 at 19:54
2
Keep in mind that a little discussion could be allowed in a SE site. "Discussion is bad" is a little SO's policy only. I still vote on topic on this one – juanformoso Jun 7 '10 at 19:57
You're right. I'm still trying to get a feel for these systems. – Zombie Praeclarum Jun 7 '10 at 20:04
2
I'd avoid best, "Which disciplines are suited to 6 year olds?" – Roger Pate Jun 8 '10 at 9:49
"Recommend" is implied (lest the people answering are too daft, which will not assume of our prudent fellow users). It also leaves little wiggle room for you to choose based on your own criteria rather than the person answering. Hopefully, people will know this and meet you half-way. – Kiwi Aug 14 '10 at 21:47

How much should I practice technique vs. just training myself physically?

I would add the martial art you are practising in the description in the very least for the optimal response. Of course, if you intently ask a general question, a fruitful discussion will still develop from that. – Kiwi Aug 14 '10 at 21:48

How do I tie my belt (obi)?
added by Keith Nicholas, edited by WikiSpeedia hang-around Oct 4 '10 at 21:04

1
This question is way too vague. Are you talking about an obi in karate-do, Iaido, Kyudo? You could be talking about a dress kimono. – Ali Aug 5 '10 at 16:13
It is too vague, but on-topic and vague. This is useful; at the site someone would demand clarification. – Tynam Nov 24 '10 at 11:24
@Tynam: This shouldn't be in our top 5 on-topic qns. – Charles Stewart Jan 16 '11 at 19:23
its the type of question someone is going to ask as its a noob question. Might get phrased in any number of variations, I started karate and was shown how to tie my belt but now I've forgotten, help! + there are some cool variations on how to do it – Keith Nicholas Jan 28 '11 at 3:35

When doing [move] in [art form] what is the [intent]?
added by Walter Jun 23 '10 at 13:06
link
I like the question, but seems to be very open for discussion. As long as people accept a range of intents for a move it is a good question, but could be destroyed by religious wars. – Lars Andren Jun 24 '10 at 8:19
I like the question. There is probably a main application (and tons of derivatives). – Barthelemy Oct 6 '10 at 19:11

How to prevent headache during Aikido trainings, while making a lot of ukemis (falls?) ?
added by Cornelius Jul 9 '10 at 10:01
link
To me this is a good on topic question, as the cause of the headaches is most likely due to technique. – slugster Jul 10 '10 at 1:37
1
Careful, if that's happening to you, you may have a problem in your neck. I have to stop practicing due to a problem in my neck and now it's getting serious. I don't think Aikido caused it, but it helped it. Consult a physician, even get a neurologist if you can. – J. Pablo Fernández Jul 14 '10 at 5:28

Suggestion: It would be better if the question was more specific about the type of 'benefits' the question is talking about. – Mark Rogers Jan 11 '11 at 18:17

I find it difficult to sit in a kneeling position for any length of time, how can I make it more comfortable?
added by Keith Nicholas Jun 23 '10 at 21:57

This question sounds more like a question for a yogi, etc. While meditation is a part of some martial arts, you'd get a better answer elsewhere. – David Goldsteen Jul 8 '10 at 12:31
3
a lot of japanese arts require sitting in Seiza, some have a whole bunch of techniques that come from the position. A lot of people, westerners especially, tend to not have sat in the position for any length of time and tend to struggle with the position. – Keith Nicholas Jul 8 '10 at 21:30
@Keith - This forum is for discussing whether questions should be on/off topic. You should refrain from answering questions until the site goes into BETA. – Walter Jul 9 '10 at 12:51
@Walter, thats exactly what I was doing, the comment was that it was an offtopic question, I'm just saying its actually an on topic question, please make sure you follow the thread of conversation before leaving comments like this :-) – Keith Nicholas Jul 11 '10 at 21:44
