Have you seen moms4mom.com? – Dan Dumitru Jun 9 '10 at 10:51
28
For starters, use a less mom focused domain. There are plenty of issues that are related only to mom's or mom's to be, so right off that bat it might turn some dad's off. – evanmcd Jul 15 '10 at 3:22
15
Amen to evanmcd... while moms4mom made a fairly graceful effort to make dads feel included from the top (e.g. message from the owners), it does have somehwat dad-unfriendly atmosphere IMHO... as a dad who contributes at least 50% of parenting effort, expertise, time and sacrifice in the family, i was turned off off that site. – user12775 Jul 25 '10 at 18:56

My 15 year old daughter [wants a tattoo]. How can I talk to her about it and convince her that it's a bad idea? (instead of making her more stubborn)
added by googletorp Jun 8 '10 at 22:06

This seems like a good example question, but the spelling is "convince", and there shouldn't be a comma after "her". – Master Of Disaster Jun 9 '10 at 3:34
1
I don't know your daughter all that well, and I don't know why she want's a tattoo, so it's hard for me to judge what arguments would persuade her. Also, I don't know where she wants the tattoo or what she wants a tattoo of, and that impacts whether or not it actually is a bad idea. In other words, this is both vague and subjective. – philosodad Oct 26 '10 at 6:48
@philosodad: This is an example question. The question is not about tattoos per se, but about how a parent can help their teenage son/daughter doing something, they probably might regret later. It most places it's illegal to get a tattoo before your are 18 anyways. – googletorp Oct 26 '10 at 7:22
A good answer to this question would be one written from experience, like "our daughter... blah blah blah". It doesn't have to be a "right" answer if it's helpful, and other people's experiences are usually helpful. – Scott Whitlock Oct 26 '10 at 23:14

I voted this off-topic because it's not really about parenting. It's asking for instructions on how to do a task that parents do often -- as well as babysitters, grandparents, etc. – Adam Porad Aug 10 '10 at 0:03
@Adam Porad: you make an interesting point. I'd been trying to figure out what the pattern was between on-topic and off-topic here, and it seems to be that questions about parenting are on-topic and questions about issues related to being a parent are off-topic. Somehow that makes sense to me... – Scott Whitlock Oct 26 '10 at 23:17

This pretty much defines "subjective", doesn't it? It's an important question with lots of answers, but... – ceejayoz Jul 15 '10 at 17:37
is there anything wrong with a question being subjective as long as it can be marked so? On StackOverflow, there are many subjective questions that provide value. If I am a parent wondering about this issue and see that there are many well thought out opinions with valid research to support their position, it would certainly help me to feel good about making a more informed decision. – evanmcd Jul 20 '10 at 1:38
I agree, there no definitive answers to the subject matters related to parenting. – Binoj Antony Jul 20 '10 at 5:21
