What techniques are there to multiplex background processing (like ADC reads) and lower-priority activities (like I²C) without a full-blown RTOS?

I think this should be generalized to 'How can I optimize a C program to run faster on an embedded host?' Or else the site would become subject to tons of code reviews and there is already a SE site for code review :-) – BigHomie Apr 18 '13 at 15:13
This is AVR related but you can generalize to other systems... atmel.com/Images/doc8453.pdf – Jamiro14 May 3 '13 at 14:45
@MDMoore313 Agreed. – Adam Lawrence May 3 '13 at 15:33
I believe "How can I optimize [a section of code performing a common task] for [specific embedded platform] " would provide a never-ending stream of questions answers to which would be useful for generations to come. If you want to optimize complete firmware for printer cartridge it's a different thing than trying to optimize reading optical encoder for measuring servo rotation with 8051. – SF. Votes over 10 for a particular question don't help to create the community. Rather than vote again for a popular question, it's best to look at some of the questions with fewer than 10 votes and upvote them. Don't forget that you can also move your votes by clicking the up arrow on a question you've already voted for to remove your vote, then voting again on another question. - Quoting Renan – Mellowcandle Apr 28 '13 at 12:51

Does one start with the requirements of the embedded system, then pick hardware, or at what point does one pick hardware, before or after a target price is set? Also, is the hardware designed first, then software, or are they both done in parallel? – BigHomie Apr 18 '13 at 15:10

This appears to be an excellent question, an answer to which would help many people entering the field. – Scott Seidman Apr 27 '13 at 12:53
@Scott thnx, I am an experienced programmer, but still a novice with hardware. Getting this site off the ground would be very beneficial for a lot of us including myself. – BigHomie Apr 27 '13 at 20:43

Surely this falls foul of the FAQs: Avoid asking questions that are subjective, argumentative, or require extended discussion... "Best" is very subjective! – Andrew May 9 '13 at 11:31
