Q&A site for 3D graphics creators

Well, in that case I feel the name of the group is not quite there yet. There is more to 3D than just modeling. There's texturing, surfacing, rigging, lighting, rendering and of course animation. So one suggestion would be to just remove "modeling" from the name or replace it with "3D Art Techniques and Software", to make it more appealing to animators and other CG professionals - only a small part of this industry is actually modeling. (to be continued...) – hexygen Sep 19 '10 at 1:11
3
But if we go this far, I don't see a reason to exclude 2D Techniques and Software. I am trying to think of what is best to the people of this industry, and let's face it - we probably won't have enough traffic to justify more than one of these sites. It would be very difficult to proceed with a different site for 2D artists (compositors, illustrators, etc). I think eventually we must have one unified site for all, and since your proposal is much more popular than the other proposal it is safer to go with this one. So maybe you should call it CG as well. We're all on the same boat here... – hexygen Sep 19 '10 at 1:30

FYI, the proposal title has changed (and descriptive text) from 3D-Modeling, to 3D Graphics. Hopefully this will be more clear, to people seeing only the title, what the site is for. Also note that it is still 3D :) Although being more inclusive can be good, I simply think that 2D/3D is a very natural dividing-line for this subject. The software is different, and the issues/questions will be totally different - there's just not enough overlap. – Cyclops Sep 28 '10 at 2:16

Good example of a general 3D-modelling question. – deizel Jun 23 '10 at 22:52
I'm not sure these kind of questions will attract CG professionals or even amateurs. A quote from the FAQ: "Ask real, expert questions: On a site about plumbing, there are 200 easy plumbing questions, and they've all been asked 100 times on other sites. Don't suggest questions like "How do I unclog a drain." Instead ask, "If you run 2.5 GPM through 50 feet of 1/2" galv pipe, how many psi will be lost to friction loss?" Remember, the pro sites WILL attract the enthusiasts, but not the other way around!" – hexygen Sep 18 '10 at 21:15
Potentially the detail of this question could be made more expert-oriented, e.g. by asking for detail on how rigging actually works, or maybe a slightly different question, but - "how to use rigging in combination with other forces (wind/gravity) to produce realistic animations?" – Peter Boughton Sep 19 '10 at 16:38
1
@hexygen: that attitude partially conflicts with the SE sites goal of being the "ultimate resource for [insert topic here]". If you can't get an answer to something as simple as that on an "ultimate resource" site.... – RCIX Sep 21 '10 at 12:21

How can I create a Python script for Blender?
added by Cyclops Jun 14 '10 at 19:09

I don't remember if that off topic vote was there before, but I've just spotted it now, and here's why it's wrong... In the form "How can I create a Python script for <package>" this is definitely on topic - lots of 3d apps use Python (or another scripting language) for creating their plugins, so asking for specific details of how plugins are created in a package is a valid question related to this proposal. If the question got into detail on Python programming itself, it would belong on StackOverflow, but for the initial creation part, that belongs here. – Peter Boughton Sep 28 '10 at 17:47

WELL, this site doesn't have to have the same flavor as SO. Perhaps someone would LIKE to answer this kind of question, complete with images/step by step proc – bobobobo Aug 16 '10 at 17:13
1
The answer could be a link to a very good youtube video demo'ing the technique. The better ones are phenomenally instructive. – Kara Marfia Sep 7 '10 at 23:43
I'm on the fence with this one. The problem with these sorts of questions is you have a ton of "right" ways to do it, not just one. This calls for an open debate which will better fit a forum based system such as cgtalk, and these resources already exist today. What we are lacking is a system to quickly answer specific questions: How do I rotate an object's pivot in Maya, for example. – hexygen Sep 18 '10 at 21:04
1
hexygen - if there are multiple ways to do it, that's fine - whilst StackExchange isn't oriented around discussion, it does support multiple responses, and allows user voting to determine which one(s) are the best/most popular. I guess it'd even be fine to link to a discussion place for working out details, then using the SE site for summarising pro/con of each method and allowing users to vote the best one. – Peter Boughton Sep 19 '10 at 16:31

What file formats are best for storing textures?
added by mazin k. Jul 25 '10 at 0:28

While you might be tempted to mark this as subjective, there are only a handful of file formats used day-to-day, each with clearly defined properties. The best answer would list the most popular three or four, along with their basic characteristics. Community wiki not required. – mazin k. Jul 25 '10 at 0:30

Absolutely, you can sell Blender-created models. – kernond Jun 11 '10 at 15:03

@kernond, thanks, but this phase isn't about answering the questions. :) All we're trying to do here, is evaluate good or bad on-topic or off-topic question, in order to define the types of question that should be on the real site. So for example, if you think this is an on-topic question, vote for it to the left. – Cyclops Jun 11 '10 at 17:39

mgbennet, whilst this would be a valid question, at the moment the most important thing for this proposal is to vote on the existing questions - we need 5 questions with 20 on-topic votes, and 4 more with 20 off-topic votes to proceed, so it'd be great if you could look at the first page of the "all votes" tab and help with this. – Peter Boughton Aug 18 '10 at 19:59

Suggesting this as an off-topic question, although a more focused "how could <feature> from <film> be implemented in <package>" might be an interesting on-topic question. Unfortunately it looks like I've hit the limit for questions so can't create that. Bah. – Peter Boughton Jul 5 '10 at 18:13

This is meant to be another off-topic Question. To clarify the difference in off-topic and NaGE (not-a-good-example) - off-topic are questions that you don't want on the site, but might be asked (so we need them to help define what not to ask). NaGE are everything else, for example "*can vegans eat honey*" - although this obviously doesn't belong on the site, it's also not likely to be asked, and doesn't help define the specific unwanted Questions. My particular Question is obviously argumentative and subjective, which we want to discourage on the site (well, I do), so it's off-topic – Cyclops Jul 7 '10 at 14:08
