How to deal with a rude and inflammatory user that -- despite not explicitly breaking any rules -- consistently violates the spirit of the rules?
added by Hyper Anthony Mar 4 '13 at 19:57

@Chris For clarification: I'm attempting to craft this question to catch the domain of questions that will ask, essentially, "How do I deal with a troll in my [context]?" A quality question in this set will ideally include the details you are concerned about (the moderator's goals and the community context) in the question body, as they understandably require more elaboration than one could reasonably fit in the question's title. With the proper context, a concise answer that may even include citations (there is a growing body of academic work here) could probably be ferreted out. – Hyper Anthony Mar 5 '13 at 5:11
@Chris I'm more than happy to modify the question title here if you have a better suggestion, but the set of questions regarding trolls (or otherwise troubled users) will undoubtedly be commonly asked if "Moderators" becomes a SE, and I think that we need to take some time in Definition to correctly address it -- and marking the whole lot "Off Topic" probably isn't the way to go about that. – Hyper Anthony Mar 5 '13 at 5:11

I understand the word limitations on area 51. Consequently, +1 – Mew Mar 5 '13 at 9:23

@Chris - A question with multiple possible answers or approaches isn't really a list question, as long as each answer or approach is explained in terms of its pros and cons. As I see it, this kind of complex sociological question is great for a stack exchange site, see Good Subjective, Bad Subjective. – Mark Booth Mar 5 '13 at 11:05
1
Also, this is representative of a large family of questions that are useful to more than the asker. There's an infinite number of types of trolls, but a limited number of "predominant species" exists, and each has their own weaknesses and techniques of dealing with. In essence, this question embodies the likely primary flow of the site's questions: "How do I deal with [troll species]"? – SF. Dec 19 '13 at 10:02

How do you deal with a back-seat moderator? Someone who isn't a moderator, but enforces rules.
added by qaisjp Mar 5 '13 at 21:11

Surely this depends on whether they are trying to enforce the rules correctly or not and whether the site has the tools to allow regular users to help in this way. – ChrisF Jan 23 '14 at 12:01

I disagree with this closure. Handling a fellow moderator within a pre-existing corporate/social framework, possibly violating pre-existing rules is entirely different than establishing a set of rules that will assure such situation will not have place, or when it does it can be dealt with efficiently. Essentially, disaster recovery vs disaster prevention. – SF. Oct 30 '13 at 9:00

This isn't even CLOSE to the same question as the supposed duplicate. Robert Cartaino is dead wrong. A prime example of the question itself: A moderator abusing his power to close a question which is not a duplicate, because it brings about the possibility of questioning the validity of said power. – Carter81 Oct 30 '13 at 15:39
1
One of the biggest problems of this website, is moderator/high rep abuse. This entire website's premise is to allow opinions to dictate everything. Opinions which are inherently biased and more than often wrong. Allowing community opinion, is just asking for low quality control. – Carter81 Oct 30 '13 at 15:41

I think this question is more about preventative measures, while the other question is about how to deal with the situation after it's already happened. – Joe Nov 2 '13 at 23:54
Part of the answer to the duplicated (i.e. first) question could easily be "Put in place or apply policies XYZ" and so I agree that that both questions are covering the same ground. At this point where we are just identifying the scope of Moderators.SE, I don't feel that we need both questions. Upvotes are best spend on other questions. – RedSirius Dec 19 '13 at 15:17
