Board and Card Games

Launched Q&A site for people who like playing board games, designing board games or modifying the rules of existing board games. Card games, too, because some games really can be classified as both.

So this is basically a Stack Exchange version of boardgamegeek.com? – mmyers Jun 10 '10 at 16:26
6
Can this site possibly exist without every other answer pointing to boardgamegeek.com? BGG already has a dedicated rules forum for nearly every game in existence, it has a high signal:noise ratio, and many designers and publishers already post there to answer rules questions. What is to be gained by splitting traffic off to here? – jdl Jun 19 '10 at 19:42

Not sure about this one. If it's CW, it should be OK, I think. – Welbog Jun 10 '10 at 11:50

Way too wide open. Maybe "10 yr old into space/pirates/lasers" or "aunt into baseball/knitting/kittens" etc. – Adam Davis Jun 10 '10 at 12:07

See meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/53919/… for why this (and probably several of our other top vote getters) are not considered good off-topic examples. – Brent Warner Jun 23 '10 at 21:41

I don't think “dear abby” style give-me-advice questions are a good use of a StackExchange site. Better to encourage questions that are written such that they will have one correct answer. – bignose Jun 20 '10 at 10:18

Lots of new games are based on the fun parts of other games, mechanically if not thematically. – Welbog Jun 10 '10 at 10:49

dup of area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/5220/… – Tadeusz A. Kadłubowski Jun 10 '10 at 12:22
@Tadeusz - in this case, no. The free parking thing is not an official rule of the game - this is inquiring about house rules or variants people play. – Adam Davis Jun 10 '10 at 12:36

The laser requires FCC and UL approval, the waffles require FDA approval, and the vampires require CDC approval. It's a certification nightmare, which, of course, is why such a game does not already exist on the market. – Adam Davis Jun 10 '10 at 12:13
@Adam: I dunno. After having seen Risk 2210, I'd believe anything. – mmyers Jun 14 '10 at 18:55

spam is spam and obviously isn't allowed. Offtopic is different. – Gordon Gustafson Jun 21 '10 at 20:09
It's not clear at all that this is spam, though. There's a very broad, blurry line between promoting a game to a crowd who will very likely be interested in it, and spam. I think this example is more off-topic than spam. – bignose Jun 22 '10 at 5:40
Yeah, it's not a great example, because slightly reworded, it could be a on topic question. "have you heard about [Settlers of Catan], I want to learn more about it, is it great?" Still not a good example, but not a horrible question. – McKay Jun 23 '10 at 16:51

Would be CW, of course, but it would certainly provide a very interesting source of entertainment on this site. Would you play Mousetrap with Bonnie and Clyde? – Adam Davis Jun 10 '10 at 12:05

The inevitable “I don't have anything interesting to ask and should really be on some discussion forum” entry. – bignose Jun 17 '10 at 7:41
I don't think this is a good example because a varient on it: "What cool games have come out in the last year?" seems like it would be an reasonable question for people trying to keep up with the latest games. – Al Crowley Jun 17 '10 at 17:21
@Al Crowley: Okay, I see how there's a fine line there; as I worded it, it didn't make it clear that's not what I mean. I've edited this to a similar, even more common please-talk-with-me question. – bignose Jun 18 '10 at 7:41
@bignose, I agree that this is an inevitable question. But it's an inevitable bad question, not an off-topic question. See here: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/53919/… – Kristo Jun 24 '10 at 0:59
