Where is a good place to start if I want to design and implement my own operating system?
added by BigMacAttack Sep 15 '13 at 22:27
link
good question, but you might want to define the word "start." in other words, what do you have already? do you know the hardware you'll be using? or if you know that, do you know what language you'll be using? or even more abstractly, what is your os designed to do? is it supposed to flex your coding muscle like a custom linux flavor? or does it have a specific purpose like raspberry pi's linux? knowing all three is important to know exactly where to start – dan-0 Mar 31 '14 at 19:23

Why operating systems need time to boot and shutdown?
added by srka Jan 4 '14 at 17:51
link
Loading graphical libraries and other systems that programs will be using. As an example Linux stripped down to just s command line can start nearly instantly (after GRUB, but on the same computer it takes a lot longer to boot into the graphical login screen. Shutdown takes time to make sure that programs have finished doing work and writing to the disks. Otherwise it is fairly instantaneous as well. – john Apr 15 '14 at 6:07

This is far too broad. – Gilles Jan 24 '14 at 12:47
I took your suggestions and amended the question. Hopefully it's more focused. Thanks. – Tremaine Feb 7 '14 at 1:06

What is a fork() ? What are differences between fork() and fork bomb ?
added by mnstalemate Feb 2 '14 at 4:46
link
This might be off topic but I will answer any way. Fork duplicates the process. A fork bomb is an attack against the computer that uses fork to create two processes and then loops back and both of those processes run fork until the computer cannot run those processes eventually leading it to run out of PIDs meaning no new programs can start. – john Apr 15 '14 at 6:13

What are the pros/cons of using [language] to develop an operating system? What are the limitations in using [language] to develop an operating system? – Mike Christiansen Mar 4 '14 at 0:03
You are probably going to have to use assembly at some point (which is different on each architecture). Using C would probably be the easiest because most examoles are in C and it gives you access to pointers (which you will need) and the ability to embed assembly into the C program. – john Apr 15 '14 at 6:11

@mirabilos, and thus it is a great example of an off-topic question. – talonx Sep 17 '13 at 15:35

No, this belongs strictly to Unix&Linux. It has nothing to do with (general) OS design, etc. – mirabilos Feb 28 '14 at 13:59
It has a LOT to do with general OS design. We are talking about an entire infrastructure here. I was not intending to point too the unix/linux point of view here, but more towards the evolution of the entire thing from an OS perspective. – Ashish Kulkarni Feb 28 '14 at 17:17
