Are there any risks associated with running a relay?
added by Phoul Jun 12 '13 at 11:11
link
This is a bad question. 1) That it refers to a Tor relay is only implied. 2) The answer is "yes," but that is only marginally useful. A question that specifically addresses Tor relays and is more likely to generate useful information in response is, "What, if any, risks are associated with running a Tor relay?" – pmocek Jun 18 '13 at 16:36
4
I think it's a good question. Running a relay is the first suggestion on the Tor Project's Get Involved page: torproject.org/getinvolved/volunteer.html.en If there are risks, then someone running a relay should know. – Anonymous Jun 18 '13 at 17:19
I'd like to know the answer to this question, though it might be more specific "What risks are associated with running a (non-exit) relay?" – Marsh Ray Jun 24 '13 at 0:30
if you are accessing risky information or content then absolutely Risk is Associative with the relay!! – Y.Srinivas Reddy Jun 27 '13 at 12:03

What does TOR explicitly NOT protect against? Are there any methods to help mitigate these vulnerabilities; and if so what are some examples?

<comments removed> Please do not use comments to answer these questions. This proposal is not part of a Q&A site, and the task at hand is to help define what is on and off topic for a site. Comments are here to help improve the questions; not to answer them. See What is the rationale for deleting answers? Thank you. – Robert Cartaino Jun 19 '13 at 16:30

Hi @knutole, please don't use comments to answer the example questions. Comments in Area 51 are intended to discuss whether or not the example question would make a good, on-topic post for the proposed site. Please wait for the beta to answer them. Good luck! :) – jmort253 Jun 12 '13 at 22:28

How can I test the Tor configuration to prove that my setup is secure?
added by jmort253 Jun 12 '13 at 2:12
link
It might be good to add in the body of the question how secure you want it to be – Keelan Jun 12 '13 at 12:13
Would be good to broaden question to: "How can I test my device configuration to check anonymity, security & Privacy?" – Anonymous Jun 17 '13 at 14:56

How do I check that I downloaded genuine Tor software and not a backdoored version by the NSA?
added by blau Jun 14 '13 at 8:14

6
I don't think that this question needs to be specific to the NSA. I would propose: "How do I know that I've downloaded genuine Tor software which hasn't been tampered with." – flamsmark Jun 17 '13 at 13:26

How can I use Tor to protect me from being tracked by my ISP?
added by jmort253 Jun 12 '13 at 2:10
link
Possibly. A bad first of three servers can see encrypted Tor traffic coming from your computer. It still doesn't know who you are and what you are doing over Tor. It merely sees "This IP address is using Tor". Tor is not illegal anywhere in the world, so using Tor by itself is fine. You are still protected from this node figuring out who you are and where you are going on the Internet. – Y.Srinivas Reddy Jun 27 '13 at 12:07

This question does not relate to the topic of the proposal.

This question could maybe asked more general: »How do I update the Tor Browser Bundle«? – qbi Jun 17 '13 at 22:36

Stack Exchange is really good at providing technical support as long as it's not used to outsource typical customer support questions. Release announcements and customer support issues should go to whatever customer support channels are available for the software. They're not a good match for a Stack Exchange site. – Robert Cartaino Jun 18 '13 at 15:32
I think this is a legitimate question, well suited for Stack Exchange. – jah Jun 21 '13 at 19:33
It's hard to imagine a question any more appropriate for a "Q&A site for researchers, developers, and users of Tor". For an explicitly user-audience site SO shouldn't blanket-ban all questions that are addressed in documentation, preferably the answer would be based upon politely (but prominently) linking to the relevant documentation. – Marsh Ray Jun 24 '13 at 0:44

Motivation: Dense regional Tor networks provide a higher degree of anonymity in a localised area. Hence, regions having high density will have a greater degree of safety and un-trackability. – AsheeshR Jun 12 '13 at 12:33
