I think this proposal is way too broad – juanformoso May 27 '10 at 14:04
13
I don't see a problem in the broadness of a site if your entry point is Google. You can see how most questions on SO are on C#, but that doesn't mean Haskell questions aren't answered. Broadness becomes a problem when less popular questions either don't get answered or if the questions start trailing too much in off-topic directions. I don't see this occuring on the current Triology, so I don't expect this to happen here if there's a strong community that focuses on what is important. – Ivo Flipse May 27 '10 at 14:25
7
If there was a way to submit new site proposals, I'd submit "Google Apps" and "Facebook" and 90% of the questions in this site would then be off topic. – Michael Pryor May 27 '10 at 17:45

<Website> is giving me a <HTTP error code>, what does it mean?

Questions asking how to handle a particular code are off-topic, more for webmasters. However, this one seems like a legitimate web(site/app) question from a user point of view. – Gnoupi Jun 1 '10 at 14:07
Should be handled on a site like SU. – slugster Jun 7 '10 at 13:09

The site is for web-based applications, not downloaded applications for specific devices. Although, what about "Apps" that interface with a web service that is otherwise web-accessible? – Chris W. Rea May 27 '10 at 3:17
1
I have to agree with Chris W. Rea. What if the question was "Is there a Google Docs app for the iPhone?" – cstack May 27 '10 at 19:50
Then you ask it on the gadget site, where they will answer it with lightning speed – Ivo Flipse May 28 '10 at 6:05

I vote "no". If this question were appropriate, then anything goes. I found a .pdf file I want to read, what now? I found an .ogg file to which I wish to listen, what now? I found a .svg file I wish to view, what now? I don't think we should cater to the computer-illiterate. Unless, perhaps someone wants to propose a SE site just for them? Might be tough to gain an audience, however. :) – raven May 31 '10 at 22:52

Why do some audio files play at the wrong speed in Google Reader?
added by Ivo Flipse Jun 1 '10 at 11:51

1
This is due to Google Reader, not the audio file, so the web app is causing a problem that can be solved – Ivo Flipse Jun 1 '10 at 11:54
1
Even if it wasn't due to GR, the OP probably won't know that when asking the question. – Roger Pate Jun 3 '10 at 6:34

this is not a good example question, but rather more a "meta" question about the topic of this group. – Juan A. Navarro Jun 6 '10 at 19:05
Internet connection is not necessary to run a Web Application. You may run them on an Intranet or local machines or (if they support) you may use them offline like Google Reader and GMail using Adobe AIR and etc. Web Applications mostly stands on protocols, platforms and techniques we used to develop and use them IMO. – Mehdi Jun 6 '10 at 20:37

N: The theoretical OP of this question is asking a financial question, not a web app question. If the question didn't mention the OP's finances, I would have voted yes. – Pops May 31 '10 at 18:02
I'll vote yes in spite of the secondary part of the question. – ChrisF May 31 '10 at 20:42

Since when is email a web app? I mean, there are web apps for managing email, but OTOH, email has been around a lot longer than the web. If the question said "My GMail account was hacked, what do I do?", that might be another kettle of fish. – Dougal Campbell Jun 3 '10 at 2:51

to those voted this post as 'not a good example' : please explain about why this is not a good example. in my opinion this subject is exactly related to Web Applications, and wants just one word answer: Yes or No, or how – maahtu Jun 7 '10 at 8:08
@maahtu: maybe it's because about webservices and not webapplications? web services are normally used by web deveopers while web applications are normally used by so called users who do not develop the application they are working with. – hakre Jun 7 '10 at 8:53
@hakre: you are right, but we can't consider these issues as completely two seperated fields, since web application programmers may need to use other developers' web services in their applications. or maybe I'm in mistake about the topic 'Web Applications'. I beleive that this proposal is related to developers who develop Web Applications not the end users. am I wrong? – maahtu Jun 7 '10 at 10:55
if this question is not related to web applications, it's better to consider it as a 'great off-topic example'. why 'not a good example'? – maahtu Jun 7 '10 at 11:02

Let's be careful throwing around the word 'illegal' - this is meant to be an international site, with a wide audience. Legality is subjective.
