I think this proposal is way too broad – juanformoso May 27 '10 at 14:04
13
I don't see a problem in the broadness of a site if your entry point is Google. You can see how most questions on SO are on C#, but that doesn't mean Haskell questions aren't answered. Broadness becomes a problem when less popular questions either don't get answered or if the questions start trailing too much in off-topic directions. I don't see this occuring on the current Triology, so I don't expect this to happen here if there's a strong community that focuses on what is important. – Ivo Flipse May 27 '10 at 14:25
7
If there was a way to submit new site proposals, I'd submit "Google Apps" and "Facebook" and 90% of the questions in this site would then be off topic. – Michael Pryor May 27 '10 at 17:45

it's imossible. you can do this in Yahoo! – maahtu Jun 5 '10 at 19:19

How do I get rid of negative comments on a website about my business?
added by Nick Berardi Jun 1 '10 at 2:03

The same as comments about a person, however if the comments are deserved, I simply don't think the admin will listen. But let's just assume the good in people ok? :-P – Ivo Flipse Jun 1 '10 at 6:58

Upload problem with the Facebook Java photo uploader
added by Ivo Flipse, edited by WikiSpeedia hang-around May 31 '10 at 23:40
link
at what point are we a de-facto support site for Facebook? The Java uploader is client software. – Jeff Atwood May 27 '10 at 5:47
When you are more successful than Facebook's support site. Wasn't that the plan? – Rog May 27 '10 at 6:21
@Jeff: You are correct, but it causes problems for using the web app. Plus the community is probably able to answer this question. If we start banning these grey area questions, than where do they have to ask them? Some cross-over between this site and Super User is inevitable – Ivo Flipse May 27 '10 at 6:22
3
If the question is about software whose sole purpose is to connect to a web app, then it belongs on this site. – cstack May 27 '10 at 19:57

added by Ivo Flipse May 25 '10 at 12:20

I'm torn over this one, it's on Stack Overflow, but wouldn't this be like a pluging for Wordpress? In other words: is requiring some coding to use Wordpress considered using Wordpress or programming for Wordpress? – Ivo Flipse May 25 '10 at 12:21
On a second thought: I think this should be allowed. We'll see where this will take the site's scope – Ivo Flipse May 26 '10 at 8:13
2
It depends on what "my site" means -- if the asker is developing a web app, I would say this question is Stack Overflow for sure; if it's just a blog, then I think it's okay. – Jon Seigel May 27 '10 at 4:01

subjective "best of" question, bad anywhere – Jeff Atwood May 27 '10 at 5:57
2
@Jeff - I'm not sure, when managed correctly, they are not that bad. This is more a software recommendation for a specific task, not a cluster of "must have windows software". On SU, it is often useful to ask for "what program to do this task". – Gnoupi May 27 '10 at 6:11
I wouldn't call: 'What's a simple online backup solution?' a bad question, so it might just be the topic of this question that's the problem. – Ivo Flipse May 27 '10 at 6:24
I'm kinda on the fence about this one, but I'll say no. While it is sometimes useful to hear "expert" opinions, they are just that. Opinions. I don't think a SE site is the way to get an answer to this question. One should look it up on Google, try out what you find, and go with the one you like best. I don't think the anonymous masses can make this decision for you. – raven May 27 '10 at 14:55
@Raven this model works just fine for a multitude of things on Super User, such as backup, anti-virus, partitioning, linux distro's and the like – Ivo Flipse May 27 '10 at 16:04

Off topic, it should be about web applications, not technologies in general. Now if they would ask about why (insert a html 5 heavy website) is slow in Firefox, it would probably be a little different – Ivo Flipse May 26 '10 at 8:59

@Jon - Too localized after a day or two, but what about on the exact moment? Would it be the kind of question which is acceptable to answer right away, if someone has more information, then to close once no longer relevant? – Gnoupi May 27 '10 at 5:32
Perhaps if they provided information as to what they were doing and if it's reproducible – Ivo Flipse May 27 '10 at 10:09

This question will always come up. If it was a wiki question in the form it is now, rather than referring to a specific application, then the answers could be the things you can check, such as your connection to your ISP, if you've got anything else running etc. – ChrisF May 27 '10 at 11:04

How do I get email links to open with my Gmail account?
added by blesh May 27 '10 at 12:29
link
Okay, I'm going to play Devil's Advocate on this one, and vote 'no', against the flow. This is more a question about how to configure your OS on how to handle email links. Yes, GMail is a web app, but telling your computer to open mailto: links in GMail instead of Outlook, Thunderbird or Mail.App is your OS vendor's realm, not Google's. I suppose one could argue that most mailto: links will be encountered in your web browser, but I still say that the web app connection is tenuous, at best. – Dougal Campbell Jun 3 '10 at 2:55
@Dougal: While I completely agree with you that this involves the OS, it's at the boundary between OS and webapp and should be handled by the site. (This is a good question.) – Roger Pate Jun 3 '10 at 3:05
I agree with @Dougal. This is Super User material. – fretje Jun 3 '10 at 8:59

Even though I'm not one of the no-votes, this borders on administering a web app instead of using one. Users are in the audience, not administrators. But if it's as easy as installing a simple plugin, that could be considered "using". – Roger Pate Jun 3 '10 at 9:19
