Wording could be clearer – Alex Angas Jun 18 '10 at 0:31
I think this is a good example of an on topic question. Yes, it could be worded better, but the question is honest and there is and answer, although there's a great deal of wriggle room in that answer if the OP didn't specify more information in the question body. Still, this is a perfect question for the site. – Adam Davis Jun 18 '10 at 5:08

testing the waters here... is this still on topic, or is it off-topic. – alexanderpas Jun 16 '10 at 23:02
I could see this as being subjective and argumentative. – Foster Brereton Jun 16 '10 at 23:10
Subjective because the application, audience, and several other variables play a role in what choice to make, and then on top of all that two experts may disagree for completely valid reasons. It's not on or off topic - it's simply not a good example.... – Adam Davis Jun 17 '10 at 1:42

Most UI questions are subjective/argumentative, unless there is user testing data with strong trends (and even then the answer only applies to the narrow case). Still, this is something I'm likely to want to ask about when designing an app. – dbkk Jun 17 '10 at 9:30

I think this is on-topic, as you often have to think about this when creating a UI and it does effect the design. E.g. a rich UI does not work well with speach outpput – Ian Jun 23 '10 at 18:45

Why is blinking/flashing considered bad practice in UI design?

Is it? It's not as bad as stealing focus. – Marek Grzenkowicz Jun 23 '10 at 10:02
@Marek AFIAK, every time I hear someone mention blinking it's followed by a lot of hysterical religious ranting about 'UI best practices'. BTW, 'stealing focus' would make for a really good on-topic example. You should add it. – Evan Plaice Jun 23 '10 at 10:19

I don't think it's possible to say which way is "best", especially without knowing more specifics. This maybe better phrased as something like "what are effective ways for representing hierarchy in UI design for a __ application?". – Justing Jun 25 '10 at 13:57

Do you mean how to implement "click" as a UI designer, or how to perform "click" as a user? – KennyTM Jun 19 '10 at 20:13
@KennyTM thanks, I clarified, I wanted to offer an off-topic example – Tobias Kienzler Jun 20 '10 at 10:07
@KennyTM I would say both would qualify for an off-topic example – hultqvist Jun 23 '10 at 11:07
I think this is on-topic,as if a UI designer wished to make the software easy to use bya eye-tracker user, then the designer need to know a bit about how a eye-tacking system is used. – Ian Jun 23 '10 at 18:46

I'm voting this on-topic since accessibility is an important part of UI design, but I'm wondering if it's bordering on implementation-specific information best asked on S.O. – Brendan Berg Jun 24 '10 at 6:06

Off Topic - It's a typical "Use google or a literature search engine" question. A follow up question such as, "In study XXYY by Soand So indicated that windows XP had a longer/shorter learning curve than windows 98, and indicated the main reason was due to some principle. Why wasn't some other principle considered a significant factor?" would be fine, but the site isn't meant to replace google and research literature search engines. – Adam Davis Jun 15 '10 at 7:56
