This UI design just feels wrong. What can I do to fix it? (aka "Please critique this design.") (includes details and screenshots/drawings)
added by Lee Jun 17 '10 at 9:37

Should be more specific, of general interest. – dbkk Jun 17 '10 at 10:05
1
@dbkk I'm not sure I completely agree. In SO, at least, there are countless posts asking about specific design decisions in which people comment about it. (e.g. the "This code smells. How can I fix it?" lot). I'll reword a little... – Lee Jun 17 '10 at 10:20
1
I'm of 2 minds. I certainly don't mind some amount of "critique this" type posts, but they also don't answer specific questions, which is sort of what stack exchange is all about. They also can lead to laziness (why learn the heuristics yourself when you can just ask somebody else to do the critique) – davidhfe Jun 18 '10 at 17:02
This is exactly the sort of question that will make the website a really useful for real world problems especially doing something as subjective as design. Its a great chance to learn from other peoples ways of approaching a problems. – Willbill Jun 22 '10 at 19:05
@davidhfe for something as subjective as UI design, I think it's a valid question. It's conceivable that someone could see something is wrong in an interface without being able to identify it. – Brendan Berg Jun 24 '10 at 5:53

Not clear - if it weren't so subjective it could easily appear on SO. – Adam Davis Jun 16 '10 at 20:44
1
Broad, subjective, and not directly related to UI. In theory, one can build a decent UI in any toolkit. Answer depends on the application. – dbkk Jun 17 '10 at 9:33
I assume this means from a UX perspective, not for the coder's comfort. Argumentative. – Tom Hawtin - tackline Jun 17 '10 at 17:35

A better question might be "how to design [X], which uses a middle mouse button on Windows for a Mac, which doesn't have a middle mouse button", though I'm not even sure that's ideal. – Tim Sullivan Jun 24 '10 at 11:20

This is off topic. It's not a question that experts are particularly interested in, especially since there's so much literature on this point, and it's very, very broad (there are a million things one can do to accomplish this, and this depends quite a bit on what the website is about and who the audience is). The best answer is, "Learn basic user interface design, and then come back with more detailed questions." – Adam Davis Jun 15 '10 at 7:52

How can I add multilingual capabilities to my UI?

This question (if it mentioned a specific framework or toolkit) would be a good implementation question on S.O., but if it were asking about layout strategies for internationalizing a form interface (for example), this would be the perfect place. – Brendan Berg Jun 24 '10 at 5:57

The question requires prior knowledge on the context, the website in question, the motive it isn't considered awesome, etc; furthermore awesome is a very subjective appreciation, what could be awesome to me it may not be to you. I do not know how to make it better, but as the user experience is one (if not the most important) ingredient in our field, we all thrieve to create "awesomeness" in user experience. – Red Knight Jun 23 '10 at 18:12

Too broad, and the best answer is the comment, "Check out these books, and then come back and ask specific questions." This would be like asking, "I need to make a program to replace Microsoft Word, how do I do that?" on stackoverflow. – Adam Davis Jun 15 '10 at 17:19
5
This is NOT a good off-topic example. Do not make new users think this is not what the site is about. Its a "bad" question for being too broad, not off-topic. There's a big difference. meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/53919/… – Gordon Gustafson Jun 20 '10 at 16:15
Agreed with @Crazy...by checking off-topic we are saying the site is NOT about building UIs, or intuitive and easy to use UIs. This is NaGE... – IAbstract Jun 20 '10 at 17:12
This question is a good example of what's likely to be asked, but unwanted. This is what makes it a good off topic question. It's an important point that we want precise specific questions. – googletorp Jun 20 '10 at 18:43
