Now that this proposal has reach commitment, I'm worried it's going to go the same way as the Beer Beta.

What's the best temperature to brew coffee?

Too general. Specify the brew. Cold brews will differ from espresso. Espresso differs from Turkish coffee, etc. etc. – KoffeePi Nov 18 '13 at 1:56

Question could easily be edited to be made specific to one brew. – dwjohnston Jan 22 '14 at 2:06
Or provide a summary for all the main methods. – dwjohnston Apr 30 '14 at 4:00
This could be a decently good wiki question when the site takes off, I think – Patrick Sebastien May 23 '14 at 13:15

I believe this is an excellent question for this proposal because it is very unique. – Patrick Sebastien Oct 18 '13 at 18:09

Especially because it cannot be asked in Seasoned Advice – hazer_drum Oct 18 '13 at 18:38

It is on the limit of too broad. This particular question might have it's place, and is likely to get a lot of views and up-votes, and also should be protected early on to reduce "spam" comments and answers. – awe Nov 1 '13 at 10:19
2
When you are thinking about protecting a question before you even ask it, it might be a sign the question could be improved. Perhaps narrow it down to a specific aspect of a coffee shop? There's a lot that goes into running a business that you might not want to discuss on Coffee. – Jefromi Nov 5 '13 at 4:58
The epitome of "too broad." – Flimzy Mar 29 '14 at 23:21

To merge one of my other questions into this one, I'd also be interested in what chemicals in the coffee make it sour when underextracted and why it gets more bitter after overextracting. – Muz Nov 18 '13 at 6:05

Is it worth getting a home espresso machine, when it comes to quality and cost, compared to buying a drink out at a cafe every day?

"Is it worth..." Is always going to end up with a subjective close, I think... – yochannah Mar 5 '14 at 21:39
1
You can easily do a comparison of both. A lot of people can't judge the cost needed to brew espressos at home or compare quality, especially people who don't have a home espresso machine. You'll get different answers in say, Indonesia vs USA vs Italy, but the person will get the info to decide for themselves when (not) to bother with a home machine. – Muz Mar 5 '14 at 21:54
yochannah is right. "Is it worth it" always has exactly two, equally valid, answers: yes, and no. It depends entirely on the person. – Flimzy Mar 29 '14 at 23:24

Can automatic espresso machines match the quality of semi-automatic espresso machines?
added by Muz Nov 17 '13 at 10:48

I don't know much about these types of machines, but I can imagine the answer is certainly "of course." It shouldn't be hard to botch a semi-automatic espresso batch, such that an automatic one is far superior. – Flimzy Mar 29 '14 at 23:27
This is a good question because it illustrates the differences in machines and the customizability of the process whilst making espresso. – Patrick Sebastien May 22 '14 at 10:11

Interesting question, which would probably lead to explanation on natural/washed beans, etc. It is also nicely specific to this SE site. – Eric Platon Mar 11 '14 at 2:23
This is probably too broad.... as the process probably depends a lot on the region, the purpose of the coffee, etc. – Flimzy Mar 29 '14 at 23:26
It might be too broad as it stands, but when specified to the preprocessing Eric mentioned, or indeed by purpose it is a nice question I think. Another question might be the comparison of processes for certain similar coffees. – hugovdberg Apr 17 '14 at 16:49
