How did the idea of creating albums come about?
added by KitP Nov 26 '13 at 19:46

That is to say the idea of collecting several songs by one artist or band together then putting them onto a medium (vinyl, CD etc) and selling them. – KitP Nov 26 '13 at 19:48

Why are bands like Deep Purple not inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? What are the criteria to be inducted?
added by hazer_drum Nov 2 '13 at 23:54

Is this question about Deep Purple, or bands "like" Deep Purple? If it's the latter, it should be closed as off-topic, too-broad, opinion-based, or not-constructive, as "like Deep Purple" is a very ambiguous term. – Flimzy Dec 6 '13 at 11:58
8
The term "like Deep Purple" is meant to explain the question by providing an example of a successful band that is still not inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I could have chosen Rush, KISS or Jethro Tull but this is not the point here. The question focuses on the Hall of Fame and its criteria of induction, not on the bands. – hazer_drum Dec 6 '13 at 17:51

Do composers prototype a work in progress? And if so, have their prototyping tools changed over time?

Would this perhaps be a good fit over on Music Practice and Performance, since it deals with the practical aspects of making music? – Avner Shahar-Kashtan Mar 24 '14 at 6:46
Personally, I'm curious about this as a fan with no music skills. That's mostly why I proposed it (though also to see if others agreed that it fit here). Maybe variations of this question can coexist on different sites... – Frank Mar 24 '14 at 7:19

How can this "question" have votes up? – Luís de Sousa Jan 8 '14 at 13:38
2
Some instruments and samples were prevalent in scores and soundtracks during a period of time. Go back and watch 1980's television and listen for all the Roland D50 patches and R-8 drum machine samples, for instance. A working musician might recognize this sort of thing immediately whereas a fan could not possibly guess what they are hearing. A clearer question of this type might be "how is that magic dust sound made in the DIsney movie Cinderella?" – Kyle Jones Jan 13 '14 at 18:22

I believe the intent of this question was to be a more generic "how [some particular gadget] is related to [some particular desirable sound]". – Radiodef Apr 10 '14 at 2:11

This question covers exactly the same ground as another question in this proposal.

Once questions asking about specific instrument identification is sufficient to help define the scope of this site. – Robert Cartaino Jul 7 '14 at 14:47

Could you make this question more specific now that it's getting some support? – jonsca Jul 19 '14 at 22:53
@jonsca, would that be a too-major change to a question that already has votes, or is that perfectly normal for Area 51? I've got a couple instances I can ask about; should I replace this or ask separately? – Monica Cellio Jul 20 '14 at 16:19
Concrete example #1: What is chorus #3 in Eric Bogle's Soldier, Soldier referring to -- who is the "people's poet"? – Monica Cellio Jul 20 '14 at 20:32
Concrete example #2: In Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen), who/what is "Scaramouche"? (I probably wouldn't ask this one because I found plausible answers on Google, but since I suspect most people here don't know Bogle but probably do known Queen (or at least BR), I'm offering it as an example of the class.) – Monica Cellio Jul 20 '14 at 20:35
@Monica I think it's fine to edit it into the body of the question. Unless you changed it so radically that it was completely different from your "parameterized" version, I think people know what they were voting for. I also think your comments are probably just as good, though they won't accompany the question list to the next phase. – jonsca Jul 21 '14 at 7:58
