Can the songs of, for instance, The Beatles be usefully considered canonically, as one might consider the works of, say, J.S.Bach?

What do you mean by canonically here? – dwjohnston Jul 21 '14 at 6:31
As a complete body of work; not, with regard to the musical device of canon. (I'd forgotten I'd posted this question; would have been less ambiguous to pick a different composer...!) – Bob Broadley Jul 21 '14 at 7:50

The examples here should be real questions - not just "questions of this form", as they will populate the site when it goes to private beta. – awe May 5 '14 at 11:13
@awe, on the last private beta I was part of the questions weren't auto-populated -- and it wouldn't make sense, as these aren't filled out but are more like question titles anyway. When the site goes to private beta the people who posted questions here should work them up as real questions. – Monica Cellio Jul 20 '14 at 20:38

Is it right for artists to write songs and then not explain what they're about ? i.e. should we, the listener, draw our own conclusions ?

This seems purely opinion-based to me; what would a good answer to this look like? – Monica Cellio Jul 20 '14 at 20:37
Actually, I agree with this. There is no definitive answer so, maybe that in itself answers the question ? – Pat Dobson Jul 21 '14 at 7:09
I like this question a lot, and it would be something very interesting to discuss (perhaps in the music.SE chatroom :hint hint:), but yeah, it's really subjective. – Ryan Kinal Jul 29 '14 at 15:15
