How do you recognize when a system/process could be improved by applying gamification concepts?

<comments removed> Please do not use comments to answer these questions. This proposal is not part of a Q&A site, and the task at hand is to help define what is on and off topic for a site. Comments are here to help improve the questions; not to answer them. See What is the rationale for deleting answers? Thank you. – Robert Cartaino Apr 19 '14 at 22:18

How do I encourage high engagement but prevent addiction using <specific component/mechanic>?

I believe that despite this question has 10 votes, it is very vague. How would you define 'addiction'? My uncle would call someone who plays WOW every day 'addicted', however from normal gamer pov, that's just 'engaged'. Whereas if someone would be playing Angry Birds every day would it be addiction? From my uncle's perspective yes. But NOT when someone kills their time on the bus to work every morning. – Dimitry K Dec 28 '13 at 12:46
1
Since this is adapting gaming concepts to a business type environment, I would consider 'addiction' to be concentrating only on the aspect that have gaming style rewards, and not doing all aspects of the job description. Ignoring some job functions to concentrate only on gamed functions contradicts the purpose, and this is asking how to avoid that scenario. – JohnP Mar 10 '14 at 14:48

@RedSirius Definitely. Consider credits on Quora: an in-system currency you earn by participation and spend to promote your questions, answers, or content. – Jay Neely Jan 3 '14 at 5:30

Actually, I had downvoted this even on the actual site :) I think we should stick to more techniques/design/analysis questions. – AsheeshR Nov 13 '13 at 14:56
I would like to see the scope include how to advocate gamification in general, or particular approaches to gamification. For instance, on the UX site we cover questions about how to convince others of the value of UX. – RedSirius Nov 18 '13 at 16:43
1
Thinking about it, and it's possible that you are both right. Part of the knock on the original was that there weren't enough "real world" problems and solutions. This might be a good public beta, rather than private beta, question. – JohnP Nov 19 '13 at 15:01
There is only a public beta now, I thought? – RedSirius Dec 6 '13 at 14:28
Is that one of the new changes? Gamification died in private beta a day or two before this proposal was started. – JohnP Dec 6 '13 at 15:25

Does gamification need to be an all-or-nothing mechanism? How can I avoid discouraging positive behaviors that don't have a "gamified" value?
added by Mureinik Jan 19 '14 at 6:23
link
I like these questions. It's really about thinking like a game designer, and appealing to players intrinsic motivations. No, it's not an all or nothing thing. You want people to stay engaged based on how game mechanics appeal to their naturally occurring motivations. Things like the need to be social, or for altruism. These are broad topics, so the best I can offer is, know your players, and give them freedom to engage or not. – Joseph Mar 14 '14 at 3:56

..or is that maybe too general? – definitely undefinable Feb 22 '14 at 16:38
Too general might not be applicable, but it's ambiguous. Intrinsic to... the person playing? The system? And much of what you are asking would depend on the psychological makeup of the person participating. – JohnP Mar 10 '14 at 14:51
Maybe narrow it down to the behavioral and social principles that apply to a country or region? and tie to a specific user behavior that is impacted? As an examples: 1. Which Social/Behavioral triggers can be used in [US] to increase [user invite rates] 2. Which Social/Behavioral triggers can be used in [Korea] to increase [user conversion] – Delicia Brummitt Mar 28 '14 at 20:47

I am not sure if "tangible" is the right word, if "tangible" excludes virtual rewards such as virtual "hats" (a SE holiday season favourite) or virtual objects that "unlocks" part of the game. But I think it would be useful to explore the different types of rewards (beyond user points) one can use. – Free Radical Jun 7 '14 at 4:16
