Guitars

Q&A site for guitar players and musicians.

I also have an idea where people could insert chord and scale fragments into their posts - very similar to how on mathoverflow they can enter text and it is converted to LaTeX by jsMath. Wholenote had a similar feature, which was pretty handy when you needed to communicate chords and scales in a post. – asgeo1 Jun 17 '10 at 5:46

Wouldn't this be covered by Musicians (or maybe even Musical Practice and Performance )? – Justin L. Jun 19 '10 at 9:03
3
@Justin, Guitar is one of (if not the most) popular instruments. I think it makes sense to have it's own community. People who are passionate about guitar would prefer that the whole site just be about that - it keeps the topic narrow enough to keep people interested. I don't think it is like Stack Overflow because most programmers are interested in multiple programming languages, and the languages themselves are interrelated. So it makes sense for them to cover multiple languages. – asgeo1 Jun 20 '10 at 1:52

While I don't find this question very interesting, myself, I imagine others might, and it's definitely right on topic. – Beska Jun 17 '10 at 14:06
I put this example question on because I think for a lot of guitarists, they're wanting to imitate their heroes and understand what equipment/techniques they used. It was a question I was looking into the answer to for myself recently. It's also not subjective, so it makes it easy to provide a clear, useful answer. – asgeo1 Jun 18 '10 at 3:21
@asgeo1: Yep, I agree...that's why I voted it up...regardless of whether it's of interest to me personally, it's a great example question that have a high interest level generally, and is very answerable. – Beska Jun 18 '10 at 13:14

What's the difference between a humbucking pickup and a single coil pickup?
added by Avalanchis Jul 8 '10 at 23:36
link
Single coil pickups are much brighter which typically define stratocaster or otherwise fender guitars. However you get a little noise in the background. Humbuckers don't have the noise problem as the pickups are designed in such a way that they are noise canceling, hence it's name. They have a warmer tone and are great for playing rhythm parts as well as solos. – Ophie Jul 31 '10 at 16:48

This would be fine if it keeps the {song} and {artist} placeholders and isn't used for specific requests. – Nick Pierpoint Jun 17 '10 at 8:01
2
@Nick Pierpoint - Forgive me if I'm just missing something, but isn't your statement contradictory (It's ok if it's for a specific song, but isn't specific)? Could you elaborate? – Lee Jun 17 '10 at 8:49
Personally, I feel sites like ultimate-guitar.com have this covered. I would be happy with questions about the performance of a song on guitar though. What do others think? – asgeo1 Jun 17 '10 at 12:45
@asgeo1 Agreed and I actually intended this one to be off-topic. – Lee Jun 23 '10 at 17:56

@Lee I guess he means that it is ok to be generic. Not for a specific song. It would be like asking "Where can I find tabs ?". The answer would be useful for everyone. It could unite in the same place a list of good sites. – Julien N Jul 2 '10 at 14:13

I'm thinking of starting a Stack Exchange site just for recording music questions. This would be better placed there. (a good question though) – asgeo1 Jun 17 '10 at 13:10

Yes there is another Q&A but the question would also suit this Q&A so it may be on-topic. (In FAQ it is said that we should not take into account the fact the question may also be suitable for another Q&A) – Julien N Jul 2 '10 at 14:40
