What would happen if an anonymous billionaire vigilanti bypassed law enforcement to fight crime himself in a huge metropolis, using high tech gadgets?

I feel that this website would be used for cross checking existing stories. People get so annoyed when a story (movie, comics...) isn't believable because of incoherences (science related, social implications, political coherence or others) – Florian Pellet May 20 '14 at 11:42

What is the effect of the size of a planet on the local environment?

Think: different gravity, meteorological effects, tidal forces etc. – drat May 20 '14 at 13:23

How would our future be affected if we encountered another society in which Ars Magica (RPG)-like magic was in use, and their magic could work here?

I don't understand why this question was voted down, a thoughtful question indeed. – dpguy Apr 29 '14 at 5:10

For a galaxy, is developing conscious beings on constituent planets a sound strategy to grow and merge with other galaxies?
added by Colin Tan Apr 25 '14 at 16:40

You might want to clarify this as currently it doesn't make much sense. I read through the question 3 times and still couldn't understand what you were asking. – Styphon Apr 27 '14 at 0:01
I have so many questions for this question, like is the galaxy a living being? Is it a multi-galactic community? Far too vague. – dpguy Apr 29 '14 at 5:09
To remove the personification of a galaxy, I could rephrase the above question as "Is a galaxy with conscious beings more likely to grow and merge with other glaxies as compared to one without conscious beings?" – Colin Tan Apr 29 '14 at 16:49
I'd say two galaxies may merge if their trajectories intersect. I don't see how the question of conscious beings in that galaxy would come in, unless the conscious beings have developed technology that allows them to move the complete galaxy. – celtschk May 1 '14 at 9:36

What other technologies would exist if technology X did?
added by Florian Pellet May 20 '14 at 12:14

Which technologies are necessary for X to exist? Which ones derive from X or from the ones necessary to X? Which other technologies can be reasonably expected to be contemporary to X? – Florian Pellet May 20 '14 at 12:15
Why the downvote, i like constructive comments? – Florian Pellet May 20 '14 at 16:21

What is the total cost of a bigger scale war by a month? How can you calculate it?
added by kexx Dec 31 '13 at 12:39

I think this question could be a really good one, if it were far more focused (a war with starships will inevitably be vastly more expensive than one with sticks and arrows) and if instead of asking for a specific dollar amount, it asked for people to describe how to arrive at the answer yourself. Depending on how your particular universe is structured (their financial systems, their economy, the cost of using weapons or tools that are unique to your universe) it will vary wildly. But if the question asked for what to consider instead of a dollar amount, it would probably be viable. – rbwhitaker Feb 20 '14 at 17:12
I might suggest editing this question to fit more along those lines. My guess is that it would do well. Or perhaps instead of editing, just add a new question to that effect. That way it doesn't start with a -3, but at 0. But it's up to you, kexx. – rbwhitaker Feb 20 '14 at 17:18
Originally I thought about a costs of a modern war let's say in 1970 or something. You are right, I could be more specific, but this was only just a sample question, in case of a real one, I would give a more detailed one. Actually I'm thinking about a simcity like MMO game, where you can build an army and attack another player in RTS style, but before that you have to build an industry which supports your army, that was the idea behind the question. – kexx Feb 21 '14 at 1:35
Actually, you can use the real-life examples, there were enought wars in 70-ties to calculate that. – Donaudampfschifffreizeitfahrt Mar 19 '14 at 8:53

I wasn't one of the downvoters on this question, but I suspect it's because this is really broad. – rbwhitaker Mar 25 '14 at 15:48

How many settlers is required to start to populate a colony?

I think the reason this got so many down votes is because it is too broad to be answerable. For starters, are we talking about a colony on Mars, where things like in vitro fertilization is an option? Can we safely assume that the people we choose from are genetically diverse to begin with (we're not getting groups of siblings)? How hostile is the environment that is being settled, and do we need to account for a high level of death in the process? Given the right setup, a question like this could be useful, but as written, I don't think this would work well. – rbwhitaker Jan 23 '14 at 15:26
kexx, you might consider deleting this question and asking another one. With 6 downvotes, I think it's pretty clear this one isn't going to make it as is, and if you trash it, you'll be able to ask another question that has the potential to get positive votes. – rbwhitaker Apr 3 '14 at 18:08
There are so many more questions also, like is this a human race? Just that alone is enough to get me thinking. – dpguy Apr 29 '14 at 5:12
