É correto conjugar, por exemplo, "tu pode" ao invés de "tu podes"; ou "tu é" ao invés de "tu és"?
added by Andrey Jul 7 '14 at 11:46
link
Tu pode ou tu é não se diz em Portugal, e acho que deverias ser considerado errado, visto que também se diz ele ou ela é. Não tem muito sentido conjugar as duas diferentes pessoas na mesma maneira. – delete Jan 4 '15 at 13:59

In Brasil, it seemed most Brazilians preferred I try to communicate in English rather than Spanish. Wouldn't Spanish be easier since it's related?
added by unknownprotocol Aug 12 '14 at 4:23
link
If you are in a city/state that has borders with spanish-speaking countries (I live in one) it's preferred to speak spanish. In other states people are just not used to hear spanish, but english is heard everywhere. So it may be easier to understand a language they know (english), than one they are not used to (spanish), even if it sound very similar. – gmauch Jan 8 '15 at 20:14

When Portuguese natives recite the alphabet, do they include "missing" letters like K and Y?
added by starsplusplus Nov 19 '14 at 15:51
link
Since the last orthographic agreement (1990), the portuguese alphabet has the same 26 letters as the english alphabet (except Angola). – Bacco Jan 10 '15 at 21:21
@Bacco These are example questions intended to define the scope of the site. It's not recommended we answer them at this stage, but if the proposal makes it to beta, you can ask the question and answer it then. – starsplusplus Jan 12 '15 at 13:07
@starsplusplus Thanks for the advice, but I've just posted the comment to alert about the current situation, as I don't know if you proposed the question aware of the obsolecence of it, or on purpose. – Bacco Jan 12 '15 at 13:17
@Bacco I was not aware of it (and I was interested to hear :) ). I think your comment (with maybe some detail on the historical situation too) would answer the question if it was asked on the full site though. – starsplusplus Jan 12 '15 at 13:25

How to translate to english the expression "Rapadura é doce, mas não é mole não" in a way that it does not become out of context in this text?
added by Victor Stafusa Feb 7 '14 at 9:04
link
Translation to English doesn't seem on-topic for a site about Portuguese. If you just need to understand the meaning of the phrase, though, that's a different question--but you should be willing to accept an answer completley in portuguese (perhaps then forming your own English translation). – Flimzy May 19 '14 at 5:36

Qual é a etimologia da palavra [palavra]?

I think that there are good and not so good etymology questions. If this question gets 10 upvotes, this suggests we should accept any question of this form. Do we really want questions like "Qual é a etimologia da palavra casa?"? Many of these would just be answered by "It's from Latin [parabola]". – Earthliŋ Jun 8 '14 at 1:21
3
I'd suggest to replace the placeholder [palavra] with a word, which has an interesting non-obvious etymology. – Earthliŋ Jun 8 '14 at 1:23

What english words are also used in portuguese language? Do they mean the same in both languages?

– gmauch Jan 9 '15 at 17:12

Are there particular mistakes Spanish speakers seem to have difficulties with when learning Portuguese?

So this Stack Exchange won't be welcoming to Spanish speaking Portuguese learners. Sad. )-: – hippietrail Aug 28 '14 at 9:36

Maybe the problem with your question is not that it is asked from the perspective of a Spanish-speaking learner of Portuguese, but rather that it is broad, in that it is asking for a (probably subjective) list of mistakes made by some Spanish-speaking learners of Portuguese... – Earthliŋ Sep 9 '14 at 1:13
2
So there are no objective mistakes everybody agrees on? How very different from most other language pairs! The main one I know is the difference between gostar and gustar where the subject and object positions are reversed. But I'm not a Spanish speaker learning Portuguese. I'm an English speaker who learned Spanish and has an interest in Portuguese. Many if not most people in this category end up speaking Portunol. Apparently we have to know each gotcha before we are allowed to ask about it? – hippietrail Sep 9 '14 at 1:23
