What about Researchers? Students? People interested in the field who aren't necessarily in the process of implementing an AI? – Patrick McLaren Jun 19 '10 at 2:29
2
@tenpn not all AI would be game related, seems to pigeon hole things a little.... @Max fair point – Jon Jun 20 '10 at 9:20
4
The field of AI is massive. I would be interested as a researcher and practitioner in sub-fields such as computational intelligence, biologically inspired computation, natural computation and intelligent agents. But where do you draw the line, surely a Q/A site on AI has to subsume topics such as robotics, machine learning and theoretical computer science concerns (logic, etc) – jasonb Jun 28 '10 at 6:53

What's a neural network?
added by Gelatin Jun 22 '10 at 16:15

This question seems too generic - I think an actual question about neural networks would be better. – forefinger Jul 3 '10 at 18:20
1
I disagree, I think that some very basic questions such as what is a neural network and what is path finding have a home here as it would help people who are completely new to the concepts discussed here. – Neel Jul 13 '10 at 12:05
I also think that even basic questions should have place in the community. And also, who would decide if a question is too basic or too generic so that it couldn't be posted here? It's an absolutely subjective answer. I think that a question like that is simple to answer and would help a lot of people. – Berne Jul 13 '10 at 15:45

I'm going to be taking a course in AI next year, what book would you recommend to a beginner?

This would be an OK question on the site. It is not a good question for defining the scope of the site. – forefinger Jul 3 '10 at 18:12
1
I agree with @forefinger...the example questions should be about the subject matter. This kind of question could be asked on any site, so it doesn't help to differentiate this one from others. – Shane Jul 9 '10 at 17:38

I think this is extremely on topic! This group should not focus on research, but on application of AI topics in actual software. – Jan Jul 10 '10 at 7:04

Should real-valued neural network inputs be scaled based on minimum/maximum values or by variance?
added by darkcanuck Jun 23 '10 at 6:30

This is a much better question than the other neural network questions because it is a practical, methodological question. (Also, everyone has asked this question at least once if they've played with such things.) – forefinger Jul 3 '10 at 18:26

I've attempted a C++ implementation of the A* pathfinding algorithm, but it generates a path which isn't the shortest in some cases.

The implementation's code and a description of the test cases where it provides the wrong path would be included. – incrediman Jun 28 '10 at 5:04
If the problem were conceptual instead of a programming error, I would like this more. – NickLarsen Jul 19 '10 at 19:33
It sounds to me like the question is about the algorithm, and the asker's confusion about it, rather than programming. So, I think it should be fair game for this site. – pkaeding Jul 19 '10 at 23:41

Are there any formal methodologies for deriving new computational intelligence algorithms from biological and/or natural systems?

This question is high-level, although appropriate for the AI researcher. One example answer is the conceptual framework by Stepney, et al., that proposes a general process which is then applied to the field of artificial immune systems. See: * S. Stepney, R. E. Smith, J. Timmis, and A. M. Tyrrell. Towards a conceptual framework for artificial immune systems. In Vincenzo Cutello, Peter J. Bentley, and Jon Timmis, editors,Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS), pages 53--64. Springer-Verlag, Germany, 2004. Also see their follow-on publications. – jasonb Jun 26 '10 at 22:35

added by David McDavidson Jul 17 '10 at 0:36

I'm torn on this one. It's an excellent question, but I'm not certain if it should be on or off-topic. In the end I went with off-topic because it is so difficult to pin down an answer. I have a feeling that this question would spawn several pages of debate without ever reaching a meaningful conclusion. – e.James Jul 17 '10 at 4:26
For the record, my answer would be yes. – e.James Jul 17 '10 at 4:26
