This may sound similar to board games proposal, but I think a game like Chess deserves the respect/audience of a dedicated site instead of being clubbed with Cards, Scrabble, Carrom etc. – Binoj Antony Jun 19 '10 at 12:40
12
Why does this need to be separate from the Board Games site which is already in public beta and already has a number of questions on Chess? – Brent Warner Nov 17 '10 at 18:48
13
@Brent, please read my first comment. The same logic by which you have many languages have their own proposals instead of having only one proposal named Languages and likewise for many other topics like Phone OSs (Android, iOS etc), Software (DotNetNuke, Selenium, etc), just look around to find so many examples of this. Above all there is no site where chess enthusiasts can ask questions especially for analysis etc to be answered. Even GMs/IMs can become members and help out. I cant imagine such experts or even users doing this on a generic website. – Binoj Antony Nov 18 '10 at 18:05

How did castling originate?
added by Gordon Gustafson Jul 7 '10 at 20:52
link
I don't know how but I think it did in Europe, originally chess didn't have castling when it was created in India. But the King has a Knight move (which gets nullified when you get a check) and hence many of the fianchetto openings are called Indian. Its to provide a safety for your king – satyajit Aug 13 '10 at 17:10

@Binoj Antony: do you mean "... for black after a Queen's Gambit Accepted opening?" – WikiSpeedia hang-around Jul 13 '10 at 11:30
@Peter, good observation, I have corrected the question. – Binoj Antony Jul 13 '10 at 12:24
It still says "white". – Mark C Sep 18 '10 at 3:03
Basically duplicates the question about the best variation against the Marshall Attack. The five on-topic questions should be fundamentally different. – DanTilkin Oct 26 '10 at 22:36

I second rufverw's vote. "What is a good continuation of this Sicilian Defense?" would be an example of something more specific and likely to be of use to those looking for it. – Barton Aug 18 '10 at 3:49

This is chess-specific, and there is a lot of chess-specific computational science that would best be combined with a chess site. – Mark C Sep 19 '10 at 19:09
It's not chess-specific. These algorithms can be used for any full information turn based game. – ytg Oct 13 '10 at 18:08
@Ytg Okay, but wouldn't there be a most optimal set of algorithms for chess, given its particulars? (I guess it wouldn't have a special name; you would just optimize certain steps.) – Mark C Oct 22 '10 at 20:39

pawns move capture diagonally because they were pikemen. They kept their shields in front of them so they could walk forward while stabbing to the sides. :) – Gordon Gustafson Sep 18 '10 at 17:46

Can playing too much correspondence chess be harmful to your over-the-board play?
added by finnw Aug 9 '10 at 22:47
link
1
It depends on how you are playing correspondence chess, if you are not moving your pieces and analyzing with your eyes it could be helpful. But if you are moving pieces over the board you get that tendencies. Also playing under pressure and winning a won game are characteristics that you can learn only OTB. – satyajit Aug 13 '10 at 17:13
By "winning a won game" do you mean holding on to a winning position? – Mark C Sep 18 '10 at 3:07
