Ubuntu

Launched Q&A site for ubuntu users and developers

I think this is better than SuperUser because it's focused on Ubuntu, allowing those not interested in Ubuntu to ignore this content entirely rather than spamming it. I think it's better than the proposal you link to for the same reason. Ubuntu forums is a mess, and StackEngine is an extremely effective and well-designed platform for creating a knowledge base. The forums have served us well but forum threads quickly become unwieldy and they do not age well. – David Siegel Jun 20 '10 at 17:40

It seems that it would be best to not have a branded Linux Q&A site. This leaves out Debian (upon which Ubuntu is based), Fedora, OpenSUSE and every other distro. There are certainly Ubuntu-specific questions, but in general, most questions are general Linux-desktop questions. It would be best to have a "Linux Desktop" Q&A site than one per-brand. – miguel.de.icaza Jun 20 '10 at 18:36

I believe that Ubuntu Forums has already proven that a site specifically tailored to answering questions for a single distribution is a sustainable and worthwhile endeavor. There are roughly 1.3 million threads and sixty thousand active users on that website. However, I personally feel that Stack Exchange would be a better medium than Ubuntu Forums for some users and situations, and that even if I or we ultimately end up being wrong, it's still worth giving a try and seeing where it goes. – Evan Jun 21 '10 at 8:27

This is intended to be an example of an off-topic question. Planning for features in future versions is done at UDS and using Launchpad blueprints, and doesn't belong on a QA site like this. – bratsche Jun 21 '10 at 19:57
Presumably you're not supposed to have to tell people what's off-topic; that's what the votes are for. ;) – Ben Alpert Jun 22 '10 at 5:43

I think this, as worded, isn't such a fantastic question because it's too open to opinion and discussion. Stack exchanges are intended to be more question-answer format. A better example of an off-topic question might be, "Is Canonical making a tablet version of Ubuntu?" or something. – bratsche Jul 12 '10 at 17:19

What is the purpose of the Ubuntu Developer Week?
added by txwikinger Jul 3 '10 at 23:28
link
The Ubuntu Developer Week is a week of online tutorials which are supposed to inspire and train potential contributors to find their place where they can help the Ubuntu community. This is supposed to lower the on-ramp and make it easier to know what is needed to help, as well as where to find information and who can be contacted. IN contrast to the Ubuntu Open Week, this week is a little more targeted towards the development process, however, also bug triage and other support functions are mentioned. – txwikinger Jul 3 '10 at 23:36

I'm confused.. why does everyone think this is such a great off-topic example? It's off-topic in the sense that it has nothing to do with Ubuntu, but that doesn't make it a "great off-topic example". – bratsche Jul 12 '10 at 17:14

This is a poor question because it doesn't pertain to Ubuntu or even Linux in general. I would argue that this type of question would be better asked in SuperUser or some other internet specific StackExchange. – MBraedley Jun 24 '10 at 19:21

This is too much of an opinion-oriented question, so it's a bad example of an off-topic question. Stack exchanges should be answerable questions. – bratsche Jul 12 '10 at 17:21

A popular flame bait. – Tadeusz A. Kadłubowski Jun 20 '10 at 10:49
I suggest we treat each disliked "UI design change" individually. – David Siegel Jun 20 '10 at 17:37
I feel that the off-topic examples should still be good questions themselves, just not best suited for this particular stackexchange. – Space Hobo Jun 21 '10 at 12:39
StackExchanges are meant to be used for questions, not opinions. That's what the forums are for. – MBraedley Jun 24 '10 at 19:27
