How do I copy/paste to & from the OS's clipboard?
added by Carpetsmoker, edited by Earthliŋ Dec 27 '14 at 1:48
link
i expect this to be related to gvim, as for terminal vim wouldn't it be using the terminal copy&paste functionality? – guido Jan 6 '15 at 22:55
1
@guido No, not really ... I had the + and * registers in mind ... I don't know what gVim does different (as I never use it), but I suspect it just uses those by default. – Carpetsmoker Jan 6 '15 at 23:15
1
@Carpetsmoker me neither (gvim), but also I didn't know the system clipboard was accessible as a register, thank you! – guido Jan 6 '15 at 23:28
1
@guido It is, and that's why it's a pretty good question – Stefan Dorunga Jan 16 '15 at 16:40

by "interactive" you mean confirm each substitution? – lisukorin Jan 22 '15 at 18:50
@lisukorin Yup, that's what I meant. – Carpetsmoker Jan 22 '15 at 18:58

As a read-only user, how to save edits to a file as root?
added by guido Jan 4 '15 at 15:17
link
Try to rephrase as: "As a read-only user, can I save edits in Vim as root?" Or something of the like. Try to make it short with few clauses. – onebree Jan 9 '15 at 14:46
@onebree thanks, I tried to shorten it a bit, if you have other suggestions, you are more than welcome (I am not an English mothertongue) – guido Jan 10 '15 at 12:13
Again, I would suggest saying "read-only user", because that's what Vim says if you normally try to write to a file you don't have permission to. (Or are viewing the file when it's already open elsewhere) – onebree Jan 10 '15 at 12:27
There is no such concept as a "read-only user" ... Also, you don't necessarily need to be root at all, using sudo means you're not using root, and you can su to other accounts. – Carpetsmoker Jan 13 '15 at 17:24
@Carpetsmoker read-only user is the user with no write perms; as onebree suggests, readonly is a better phrasing for a sample question because vi reports [readonly] in the status line (I had 'with no write perms' in the original wording). – guido Jan 13 '15 at 21:55

Are y/abc/xyz/ substitutions available somehow?
added by tohecz Dec 21 '14 at 19:16
link
I don't quite understand what you're asking? – Carpetsmoker Dec 23 '14 at 9:45
Well, it's difficult in the short title. I would like an equivalent of sed's echo ciao | sed 'y/abc/xyz', which would give "zixo", and I don't know how to do that. – tohecz Dec 23 '14 at 10:57
4
Right; You didn't mention sed :-) A better title might be something like: "How can I emulate tr(1) or the 'y' command from sed in Vim?" – Carpetsmoker Dec 28 '14 at 4:27
Yep, sounds good. But well, the question can be half a page, the title only half a line ;) – tohecz Jan 15 '15 at 20:00

How do I add syntax highlighting for a less-popular language to Vim?
added by muru Dec 31 '14 at 21:53
link
That's a very broad question. Voting to close. – Hamlet Jan 4 '15 at 22:17
3
If you say so. I was imagining a broad-strokes answer covering: Do this for keyword highlighting, do that for comment highlighting, this can't be done, place this file there, and identify these files as using this syntax - the specific details for each language vary, of course, and can be covered using more specific questions, such as askubuntu.com/q/540235/158442 – muru Jan 4 '15 at 22:39
3
I would rephrase as: "How do I add syntax highlighting for a language unsupported in Vim?" > > This could lead to answers covering plugins, other vi-related editors, user-defined syntax, etc. – onebree Jan 9 '15 at 14:43
4
@onebree edited, but kept the "less-popular" phrasing so that "Install syntastic" doesn't become the top answer. – muru Jan 13 '15 at 6:52
yet, unsupported less-popular would be even better – guido Jan 17 '15 at 4:38

is there really a point for including "using vim" in the question? – guido Jan 6 '15 at 22:54

There is a point, because Vim had additional features to vi, and there's also gvim, nvi, etc... Nevertheless it's still a greatly worded Q – onebree Jan 10 '15 at 12:31

What other sorts of highlighting are you thinking about? Search highlighting (hlsearch) is the only one I can think off... – Carpetsmoker Jan 14 '15 at 10:56
@Carpetsmoker, I don't know of any others either. I feel like I only use about 10% of vim's features so I figured it was possible there were other forms of highlighting that I didn't know about. – drs Jan 14 '15 at 14:43
