About to open source a project. Under which license I should publish it? What will be the consequences if I pull it from the public in the future?
added by Abdullah Saleem Mar 15 '15 at 16:14
link
The sub-question asking under which license you should publish your project seems too broad. Asking what happens when you pull it from the public given a certain license seems like a good question though. – overactor Mar 16 '15 at 12:22
This question is really too broad. There are countless licenses and which one to pick depends on countless factors. – Philipp Mar 17 '15 at 15:27
The second subquestion is a good one though. More importantly "Can I pull it from the public in the future?" But I've used my 5 questions :) – kdopen Mar 17 '15 at 18:38

Will changing my license to GPL3 cause companies to fork my project at its GPL2 version?
added by kdopen Mar 17 '15 at 17:31
link
I doubt that this question would be constructive, as it would require clairvoyant powers to tell how specific companies would react to a license change of a specific project. A better question would be to ask 1. if they could and 2. what reasons they would have. – Philipp Mar 18 '15 at 12:00
@Phillipp I think the two questions you mentioned were implied, but making them explicit does seem like a good idea. I think it's okay to keep those as one question by the way. I suppose the two questions as you phrase them would go in the question body. – overactor Mar 18 '15 at 12:17

This question is really broad / opinionated / off topic as-is, but I'm interested in hearing if this kind of questions are well fit for the site, considering that it may well be getting questions like this if it's not clearly defined to disallow them. – Unihedron Jan 24 '15 at 7:30

I expect this one to be downvoted :) Then again, it's one of the most often asked questions. – kdopen Mar 17 '15 at 15:49
This would probably be moved to softwarerecs.stackexchange.com but I'd expect to see a lot of this type of question so we need to decide what to do with them – kdopen Mar 17 '15 at 17:39

While this does deal with open source software, it's a question more fit for a site dealing in law (there's a few proposals IIRC). I'd also recommend the gpl-violations mailing list. – Cole Johnson Mar 18 '15 at 15:37

This question is not a good fit to our Q&A format. We expect answers to generally involve facts, references, or specific expertise; this question will likely solicit opinion, debate, arguments, polling, or extended discussion.

Is there any way of earning money while producing an open source games following model XYZ? [closed]
added by Thijser Jan 20 '15 at 9:19
link

closed as not a real question by warren, QPaysTaxes, Unihedron, Carpetsmoker, ProgramFOX Feb 12 '15 at 16:32

It's difficult to tell what is being asked here. This question is ambiguous, vague, incomplete, overly broad, or rhetorical and cannot be reasonably answered in its current form.

1
I feel like this question would benefit from a tighter scope. Maybe consider adding what type of game it is. Or suggest a way of earning money and ask what sort of revenue you can realistically expect. – overactor Jan 21 '15 at 10:33
I have added in that it only counts within model XYZ does that help? – Thijser Jan 23 '15 at 12:37

This question does not relate to the topic of the proposal.

2
while modularization is an interesting development topic, it is suited to Programmers.SE, given that there is nothing about the topic that is inherently "open source" – warren Jan 27 '15 at 15:03
2
@warren At the time when I posted this, I could see it work. I now agree that it is better kept on Programmers.SE. – overactor Jan 27 '15 at 15:32
And also I. Maybe you could delete the example question. – peterh Jan 30 '15 at 23:20

This is an interesting question - but it's not related to "open source" development *per se*: and the answer is "yes, you could". – warren Jan 21 '15 at 1:49
1
Yes, it is related with opensource development, mediawiki engine is far the most used opensource software on the net. This question was closed unfairly, I suggest vote for reopen. – peterh Jan 24 '15 at 13:27
1
@PeterHorvath This proposal is for "questions regarding motivation, marketing, organisation and licences pertaining to Open Source", not questions about how to use specific pieces of open source software. Such questions can be asked on superuser, serverfault, webapps or where ever they are on-topic. – Philipp Jan 26 '15 at 0:16
1
@Philipp No. It can be decided to be so, but this decision wasn't ever made. If a question is ontopic or offtopic on other SE sites, it was always irrelevant in the SE network. And other questions about motivations, etc., you voted down and closed as "too broad". – peterh Jan 26 '15 at 0:20

2
how is this related to "open source"? – warren Jan 21 '15 at 1:50
1
@warren Mediawiki is the far most popular opensource product in everyday use on the net. Maybe a little bit of reformulating could be needed into the direction of the interaction of the meta tags and the community management. – peterh Jan 22 '15 at 19:37
1
@JamesJenkins I suggest to delete this question and then reopen it reformulated. – peterh Jan 22 '15 at 19:40
