How does this differ from DocType? Is that more for designers? – Casebash Jun 2 '10 at 3:21
2
Well, it's right on their homepage (doctype.com): "Doctype is a free question and answer site for web designers. You can ask questions about CSS, HTML, web design and email design". I think the distinction is obvious. – Dan Dumitru Jun 3 '10 at 10:45
Hmm, this suggestion looks like something I suggested. See here: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/6307/… – Master Of Disaster Jun 6 '10 at 1:57

Any data on what's the optimal length for a blog post?
added by Joel Spolsky♦ May 28 '10 at 22:20
link
1
Answering the question "Optimal for what?" indicates that this really isn't Webmaster related at all (unless a wordpress person is a webmaster). It's blogger/content/SEO related and largely subjective. – d03boy Jun 2 '10 at 4:26
1
There have been usability studies about readership habits vs article length. I'd say it's on-topic, considering the SEO component of this group. – Dougal Campbell Jun 3 '10 at 13:58
This isn't even slightly on-topic for webmasters. – Master Of Disaster Jun 6 '10 at 5:16
@Kinopiko - I think that understanding the attention span of your visitors and providing content that agrees with it is most decidedly on topic. But, this question is rather localized to blogging. If the question were more general, I'd vote it as on topic. – Tim Post Jun 6 '10 at 7:42
1
1) Off topic you can just be a user and write a blog not a WebMaster. 2) This is subjective. – David Basarab Jun 7 '10 at 18:20

Why can't you put <p> tags inside <b> tags?

possible, but a "pro" webmaster or operator wouldn't necessarily be asking this – Jeff Atwood May 28 '10 at 22:24
This sounds like it's a StackOverflow question. – brainimus May 29 '10 at 3:43
Voting no, based on Jeff's comment. – Dougal Campbell Jun 3 '10 at 13:53

For my website, should I use a hosted blog site or install my own blog engine?
added by Jeff Atwood May 28 '10 at 22:27
link
2
I'm undecided about this question. I'm not sure if it applies since you may not be a webmaster yet (as in you don't have a site up and running). Plus if you use a completely hosted solution you may not even have control of the parts of the site that would be webmaster controlled. For example you're only allowed to change themes and post items. This question to me is more like should I be a webmaster (I install) or let someone else handle those issues (use hosted solution). – brainimus May 29 '10 at 3:41

Is a .com domain that much better than a .net domain?
added by Jeff Atwood May 28 '10 at 22:34
link
1
Isn't this a subjective question? – brainimus May 29 '10 at 3:42
1
@brainimus Not necessarily. Depends on what type of weight search engines attribute to network domains, and commercial domains. – Jonathan Sampson May 29 '10 at 16:15
@Jonathan I did not know that. Looks like StackExchange is teaching me stuff already! Changed my vote to on-topic. – brainimus Jun 1 '10 at 13:26

1
"Should I sell it?" seems like a daft question, so this is trying to deliberately get voted as "off topic example"? But "How much is my website worth?" seems like a reasonable query. – Master Of Disaster Jun 7 '10 at 10:16

Should I join a webring?
added by Tobias Kienzler May 31 '10 at 12:24

1
Why is this not a good topic for a pro webmaster site? Are webrings "sooo 1999" or are people just voting "no" because they don't believe in webrings, like the toothfairy? There are a few (precious few, but a few) cases where joining a webring would be a good idea. – Adam Davis Jun 1 '10 at 4:01
I feel the answer will be either subjective or pointless. What could be the answer to this question? "Yes. why not?" – Juan A. Navarro Jun 2 '10 at 5:59
This seems like an OK question to me - with the answer "NO" unless you want links to dead geocities pages on your website. – Master Of Disaster Jun 6 '10 at 2:32

Should I consider using version control software to help manage my site?
added by Tim Post Jun 6 '10 at 3:00

Or even "Should I use version control software" if we want the question to actually make any sense - if the person hasn't even considered using version control software, then they wouldn't have asked the question. – Master Of Disaster Jun 6 '10 at 3:48
@Kinopiko - I'm a little confused by your comment. The question was an example of someone giving some consideration to using a VCS. A substantial number of people (individuals and companies) use VCS to manage changes to static pages, or changes to scripts that produce dynamic pages. – Tim Post Jun 6 '10 at 3:59
This is nitpicking on my part, but if you're considering doing something, you ask "Should I do ..." not "Should I consider doing ...". – Master Of Disaster Jun 6 '10 at 4:08
