How can I tell if someone from [culture] understood what I said?
added by Dan Getz Jan 29 '16 at 18:04

The answer would likely be very subjective since it will depend the cultures involved – Yao Choa Jun 24 '16 at 1:51
It would be a specific set of sentences that you are asking about. – ahorn Nov 6 '16 at 13:05
Look the guy put a variable in there, so it would cover a myriad of questions for every culture and sub culture you can think of...this should be enough to cover several questions if it gets enough upvotes. – leeand00 Nov 16 '16 at 19:19

Is it OK to engage a stranger's conversation in public space? How to add a good note to them politely, avoiding interrupting them?
added by Probably Dec 22 '15 at 20:48
link
I should flag this question as primary-opinion based because that would depend of public space for example: any approach to stranger may be considered as caution signal whether the stranger may be shy or perceive/feel not allow such or any contact ... of course; all depends on other factors; i.e "type of conversation, approaching, stranger' viewpoint, etc...". – Mauricio Jan 6 '16 at 22:16
Apparently, etiquette mostly isn't opinion based. I wanted to disucuss wheter it fits for this page. And why should depend on the person when it's question if it is OK to interrupt conversation? – Probably Jan 7 '16 at 13:21
I'd guess it depends heavily upon the public space. Bathroom? It doesn't matter how politely you try to phrase it, your comment of "nice genitalia" will feel like an interruption. – Parthian Shot Mar 22 '16 at 16:24
@Parthian Shot Yeah, that's a good point, though I think the question still isn't solved. But I apologize, I realized what Mauricio ment when he commented that it depends on a person - a young boy shouldn't interrupt a two politician's conversation. – Probably Mar 22 '16 at 17:55

Why is it that people are often more likely to accept votes/answers without examples in everyday life? (not on SE)
added by Umbranus Nov 4 '16 at 10:08
link
My example: When voting whether to accept someone new to an online community a simple no is often just accepted while answering with no, because XY gets your reason discussed and dismissed. I have seen it with gaming communities several times. – Umbranus Nov 4 '16 at 10:10

How to tell my mom that her being overly critical in my teenage years is seriously affecting my adult life?
added by sfThomas Jan 28 '16 at 20:17

I guess the question becomes "Why would you tell her?". If it isn't still affecting you, and you don't have younger siblings who are still teenagers, it may not serve any purpose other than to upset her at this point. – Parthian Shot Mar 14 '16 at 19:42
But what if it is still affecting me? Other reasons might be to get so-called closure, just like when you still care enough to let the other one know that they hurt you. – sfThomas Mar 15 '16 at 9:25

@Jon Mark Perry : Your interpersonal skills strongly impact your capacity to flirt or succeed at job interviews. In fact, I'm confident that having poor interpersonal skills is the most important reason for failing at a job interview. Hence, I do believe this question is totally on topic and can offer very useful information in a SE community that focuses on interpersonal skills. – John Slegers Aug 23 '16 at 11:39

How do you move from the relationship level: friendly acquaintance or coworker to actual friendship? How to know when or if it is appropriate to try?
added by TruthIsBeauty Mar 5 '16 at 4:03
link
Do you think you can get a stamp for the establishment of a true friendship? (There's a gradual relationship between a friend and a coworker, it's natural and good, that it exists) – Probably Apr 15 '16 at 19:34
2
@probably Obviously, you don't get a stamp. Just in general, how would I know whether someone was a friend or a coworker? That was the whole point of the question. But one of the hardest things about being autistic, for me, is the inability to pick up on whether something is appropriate in a social situation. For example, whether it is ok to ask if you want to get lunch together, and at what point (if any) that would move to asking to schedule lunches together (my job has shifting lunches) without it being seen as flirting or making them not like you. – TruthIsBeauty Apr 16 '16 at 3:02

How to learn the subtle rules of interaction with a person you have just met without making them angry?

1. You meet someone you didn't previously know. 2. You interact with them repeatedly...and... 2.1 You learn or are already aligned with what their rules are... -or- 2.2 You can't seem to learn what their rules are, and end up pissing off both of you and neither of you interact any more. how to encourage a prostitute to find another work? [closed]

This question is not a good fit to our Q&A format. We expect answers to generally involve facts, references, or specific expertise; this question will likely solicit opinion, debate, arguments, polling, or extended discussion.

1
Unless this question could also read "how to encourage a baker to find another work?" it is probably more appropriate for a faith based site. – James Jenkins Nov 23 '15 at 17:48
4
I'm not sure that political correctness is the problem. The question is very specific, though I know no better place for it to go; we don't have a sex work SE. If it was reworded to "How to encourage a person to find other work?", I think that'd be acceptable. – Ravenstine Nov 24 '15 at 6:29
1
you can generalize or reword but the question itself remains as is. My aim is not offending them, not blaming or hating. This is for people who perform this career because they know nothing else/or have no opportunity for another job to make money to take care of themselves and their parents. This is a job, i respect it surely, but just try to think how we can encourage people who dont want to work in this career in their all life. This is why i used the word "encourage" instead of convince or persuade. Not because i hate them or i think this job should never exist. – Asqan Nov 24 '15 at 9:15
1
I understand your problem, but it just sounds offensive. I see that it's based on good motivation, and I respect that, i just don't think that the wording is appropriate. – Issa Chanzi Nov 26 '15 at 1:11
1
@user3169 I agree that it's broad. But I disagree that that's because we need to know the motivation of the person doing the encouraging; I don't see that as actually relevant. We know their basic goal; what more must we know about them? What it does lack is relevant information on the person being encouraged, beyond the fact that they're a prostitute. They're the one whose personal circumstances and beliefs will affect the answers the most. (Of course most of those details don't belong in an example question title.) – Dan Getz Apr 18 '16 at 22:57
