Worldbuilding: Is there an acceptable range of “width-to-depth” ratio for moving bodies or water (such as rivers, streams, etc.), in soil types found on Earth?

Worldbuilding: What might prompt an evolving society to use a counting system that's not base 5/10/20, aside from the obvious “not having 5 digits per hand/foot?”
