About a year ago, I started teaching myself ruby in order to build a volunteer management app (using rails and as a volunteer) for several nonprofits I'm involved with. Today, that app is largely complete and is being actively used to organize volunteer events (and is very successful, I might add).
I'm VERY grateful to the stack overflow community, and to the internet in general (codecademy is awesome!), for providing the open source knowledge and tools necessary to create this volunteer project--even though I had no prior programming knowledge.
